ELECTION DAY OFFICIALS REPORT SMOOTH START AS VOTING BEGINS ACROSS NORTH CAROLINA ELECTION DAY OFFICIALS REPORT SMOOTH START AS VOTING BEGINS ACROSS NORTH CAROLINA

Happy Election Day! Across the country and Western North Carolina, people are heading to the polls to cast their vote in this highly significant presidential election.

As of Monday afternoon, nearly 4.6 million people in North Carolina had already cast their ballots.

As of 11:15 a.m., Buncombe County Elections Director Corinne Duncan tells News 13 6380 voters have already cast their vote, bringing the total percentage of registered voters in the county who have voted in this election to 71% so far.

Pisgah Elementary School and Pole Creek Baptist Church have seen the highest numbers so far with 219 and 205 respectively.

Additionally, there have been no reported incidents in Buncombe County, and the NC State Board of Elections reports that voter turnout is steady across North Carolina.

Election officials said, as of Monday afternoon, nearly 4.6 million votes had been cast. That’s just shy of the 4.7 million total votes cast in the 2016 election.

Election officials hope to have results rolling in tonight by 8:30 p.m. “The first results people will see will be all of those early votes, all of those absentee votes that we received so far,” said Buncombe County Communications Director Lilian Govus. “Then, as our polling locations shut down anyone who’s in line by 730 will be allowed to vote.”

Govus says in the 2016 election, the county received 8,000 absent ballot requests. This year, they received 51,000 requests; 31,000 of those have since been returned.

Voters who have not submitted absentee ballots must submit them no later than 5 p.m. to their Election Office.

Polling sites will close Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. You can check approximate wait times at your polling location before you leave the house, https://www.buncombecounty.org/governing/depts/election/election-day.aspx">just click here.

In Henderson and Transylvania Counties, the "flood" of early voters means fewer people will be in to physically vote on this Election Day. Both counties have already reported historic levels of participation. The Board of Elections reports they've received close to 42,000 early votes, plus an additional 15,000 absentee votes.

The elections director says that only leaves around 10,000 votes on the table.
