Burnt Hills' Vincent Venditti makes smooth transition back to baseball - Times Union

Vincent Venditti is a senior baseball player at Burnt Hills.

Headed to play his college baseball at Saint Rose for coach Wayne Jones, Vendetti enjoyed a huge week on the diamond that included two home runs in a 7-3 triumph over Shenendehowa and pitched six innings of three-hit ball to go along with another home run in a 4-0 decision over Saratoga Springs.

Venditti decided to play football for the first time as a senior and Sunday landed a spot on the Times Union Large School first team defense at safety.

Q: Football was pushed back because of the coronavirus pandemic into a Fall Season II format contested during March and April and you immediately transitioned into baseball. Not much rest, but how exciting is it to have the seasons you've had playing football and baseball?

A: It is fun. I decided to play football for the first time this year. It is my senior year, so I might as well play. The transition has been fine. We didn't have a ton of time to get ready for baseball. I think we are playing well right now and the team is really coming together.

Q: I have asked people whether they had a season altered, or postponed as in your case last spring, how difficult was that to deal with?

A: It was tough. We got to the last day of tryouts, and then everything was closed down. It was tough for a while to have nothing to do. Getting back to playing with summer ball and finally having a senior season, I feel lucky and happy to be playing again.

Q: You had two home runs versus Shen, obviously a big accomplishment and it came in a win, and a strong pitching performance beating Saratoga. Which one provided more happiness?

A: I think Shen because my coach told us he thinks we snapped an 18-year losing streak against them. To have a close game, go into extras and win it boosted the team's morale a lot. Hopefully, it sets the pace for the rest of the season.

Q: Were both home runs bombs, or did they sneak over the fence?

A: The first one to lead off the game, I wasn't sure about. The second one to tie the game in the seventh I knew was gone. I knew I got a hold of that one.

Q: The home runs and the win against Shen had to feel good considering the team history against them, right?

A: It was really good. Wayne came to that game, and I got to play in front of him.

Q: Another exciting element about playing again this spring, unlike the sports playing in the fall, winter and Fall Season II, is there will be sectionals. How much are looking forward to that to conclude your senior season?

A: I am really excited about that. Two years ago, we lost in the first round against Ballston Spa, and they went on to win it all (in capturing the 2019 Class A state title). I think we have a good shot this year, so I am excited to play in sectionals one last time.

Q: I think a lot of people see that you played football for the first time and wonder, what compelled you to come out for the team this year?

A: I have always wanted to play football. Every year it gets to that season and I would think "maybe not. I might get hurt for baseball." This year, I had a couple of friends that never played before and decided to play, so I decided why not play?

Q: Did you surprise yourself with how well you did with football?

A: Yes, I did. I really didn't expect to play that much, but I am glad I was able to help the team out as much as I did and play as much as I did.

Q: Your senior year ends up having your athletic time jammed into a four-month window between football and baseball. It is going to end in a month, so it that surprising to think about?

A: That is another reason why I decided to play football. It is my senior year, and I am going to regret not playing when my friends were playing. I am trying to take advantage of it and take everything in.

Q: What was it about baseball that attracted you to the sport?

A: I am not sure. I have two younger brothers that play. We just fell in love with it. We play wiffleball in the backyard every day since we were little. We all stuck with it and, luckily, we are as good as we are and continue to play.
