BUFFALO — The Southwestern Central School sailing team competed in the Buffalo Spring Fling on Sunday.

Nine teams competed with both A and B divisions. Sailing for A Division was Brooks Turcotte with Nolan Lefler, and B Division was Philipp Meyer with Matt Lefler. Alyson Dalton and Jack Slater of Southwestern Central also sailed A Division in a Mixed Team. Competition was close with Southwestern sailors holding a slim one-point lead going into the final race for each division, with the local sailors edging out Amherst/Williamsville East High Schools, which placed second.

It was a great day for sailing with a steady breeze at the start and a little bit of everything throughout the day. A short lull paused sailing, but then the wind shifted 180 degrees and races continued. The teams did well utilizing boat speed and handling skills, putting all the pieces together to earn three first-place races and three second-place races, earning them first-place overall with the lowest score of 23.

The Southwesern Central Sailing Team will be traveling to Tall Timbers, Maryland in two weeks to participate in the MASSA Silver Championships. They will return to Buffalo a week later to compete in the New York State Championships.
