The norm for the Giants: Crawford HR, a smooth DeSclafani start, an injury — and a win - San Francisco Chronicle

Tuesday’s game was Peak Giants 2021. Some homers, including yet another by Brandon Crawford, a strong outing by a starter and an injury to a second baseman.

Also, the most important ingredient: a narrow win. The Giants downed the Reds 4-2 in Cincinnati to move a season-high 10 games over .500. At 26-16, San Francisco has the best record in the majors.

Alex Dickerson was the man who delivered the big blast at Great American Ball Park, a three-run shot off Luis Castillo in the fourth. Crawford added his team-leading 10th homer, a solo drive in the seventh that was the first run allowed all year by former Giants reliever Heath Hembree. San Francisco has homered in 15 consecutive road games, the longest in-season streak in franchise history.

“We have guys up and down the lineup on a nightly basis that have the ability to hit home runs,” manager Gabe Kapler said. “We really feel like even down in the 7-hole, we had there today (Dickerson). He’s a guy with plus-plus power, so we’re definitely capable of hitting home runs.”

Crawford’s 10 homers in his first 36 games are the most by a Giants player in 36 games played since Barry Bonds hit 11 in 2007 and the most by a Giants shortstop in that span since Dick Bartell in 1937, according to MLB’s Sarah Langs. Crawford also made a terrific defensive play, going deep in the hole for a sharp shot by Eugenio Suárez in the eighth.

Right-hander Anthony DeSclafani opened the Giants' road trip with five shutout innings in a win over Pittsburgh on Thursday, then gave up one run in seven innings in a win over Cincinnati on Tuesday. A look at his two starts:

“This is best he’s looked in his whole career,” Dickerson said. “He has elite power.”

The starter who thrived: Anthony DeSclafani, a former member of the Reds’ rotation, who worked seven innings and allowed six hits, two walks and one run. He struck out seven.

Then there was the near-daily injury. Wilmer Flores, who has played second almost every day since Tommy La Stella went on the injured list May 3, left in the second inning after going from first to third on Dickerson’s double. The team announced that he has right hamstring tightness, and Kapler said that Donovan Solano — on the IL for a month with a calf strain — will join the Giants in Cincinnati on Wednesday.

Three days removed from the IL himself, Dickerson had three of the Giants’ eight hits.

“The first two days, I didn’t like how passive I was,” he said. “So, really, the focus today was trying to be a little more aggressive, not give them strikes early in the count.”

The Giants needed the homers because they stranded eight men and struck out a mind-boggling 17 times, thanks in part to the bright background with the early-evening start.

DeSclafani (4-1) did some fancy work to get out of jams in the early going. After allowing Jesse Winker’s leadoff homer on an 0-2 pitch and a single by Nick Castellanos, DeSclafani struck out Suárez, picked off Castellanos and got Tyler Naquin to fly out. The next inning, after Kyle Farmer and Jonathan India singled, DeSclafani struck out three in a row.

Zack Littell allowed a solo homer on an 0-2 count, a shot by Castellanos in the eighth.

La Stella is out with a hamstring strain until at least July, and every member of the infield has missed at least a few games with various injuries; first baseman Brandon Belt sat for the third game in a row with left side tightness, but has shown recent improvement.

The Giants placed La Stella on the 60-day IL and acquired right-hander Trevor Hildenberger on waivers from the Mets; the reliever went to Mitty and Cal. The previous day, the team picked up outfielder Braden Bishop, who is from San Carlos and played at St. Francis, on waivers from the Mariners.
