The worst-kept secret in the Denver Nuggets’ front office was finally revealed Tuesday, as the franchise announced Calvin Booth as its next general manager.
Booth replaces Arturas Karnisovas, who left this spring to take a job as executive vice president of basketball operations for the Chicago Bulls. Booth had long been rumored to be Karnisovas’ replacement, but it wasn’t official until Tuesday.
“Calvin is one of the brightest basketball minds in our league,” Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly said in a news release. “We are very fortunate to have him as part of our organization and are extremely excited for his new role.”
Booth has spent three season with the Nuggets after being hired as assistant general manager in 2017.
The 44-year-old played a role in the drafting of Monte Morris, Michael Porter Jr., Bol Bol and Vlatko Cancar., according to the franchise, as the Nuggets ascended to Western Conference contender status during his time with the team.
Booth previously spent four seasons working in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ front office (2013-17), starting as a scout before rising to the level of director of player personnel. He was also a scout for the New Orleans Pelicans from 2012-13.
The Penn State product had a 10-year NBA career with seven franchises, appearing in 366 games with averages of 3.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game. He was drafted 35th overall in the 1999 NBA draft by the Washington Wizards after a four-year run with the Nittany Lions that saw him named the Big Ten’s defensive player of the year in 1998.
