For Astros' Ryan Pressly, surprise start a smooth one - Houston Chronicle

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ryan Pressly’s surprise start required only 12 pitches.

Pitching first in place of Josh James during the Astros’ 15-6 exhibition win against the Royals on Tuesday, Pressly showed no ill effects of the blister that appeared on his right index finger last week. His fastball approached 96 mph. The first two hitters he saw struck out looking.

Pressly needed only four more pitches to finish the outing, inducing a weak ground ball to Carlos Correa that concluded the setup man’s summer camp work.

“I was really happy with my breaking stuff, the fastball had some life to it,” Pressly said. “I’m really excited with where I’m at compared to the end of last year. Everything is moving better and more in sync so I’m excited to get the season going.”

“Everything felt good. I feel like I’m ready to go, it’s just waiting until the Mariners come into town.”

Pressly said his surprise blister subsided after three days. He’s dealt with other blister issues before, but only back when he was a minor leaguer. Pressly intimated the unorthodox nature of the season — starting in spring training, stopping and then starting back up in summer – could have contributed.

Pressly is the only comfort in a bullpen consumed with chaos. The Astros are all but assured to open the season without Brad Peacock, Austin Pruitt, Jose Urquidy and Joe Smith. Closer Roberto Osuna’s status for Friday's season opener is unknown, too, after his late arrival to camp.

If Osuna is not ready for the season, Pressly will assume the closer’s role, one he said Tuesday does not alter his mindset or preparation.

“My routine won’t really change — it’s just pitching one inning later,” Pressly said. “I’ve done it before, so it’s nothing really out of the ordinary for me. You have to minimize mistakes in that ninth-inning role and Osuna probably does that better than anybody.

“It’ll be nice once we get him back on the mound pitching for us in the ninth, but until he gets back, I’ll do whatever the team needs me to do.”
