TREVOR Nelson led the tributes to garage DJ Steve Sutherland following reports of his death.

Fans described the Twice as Nice DJ as as a "legend" while Nelson said his passing was a "great loss".

Trevor Nelson wrote on Twitter: "Just heard the sad news of another great loss to British black music.

"Condolences to the Family of Steve Sutherland who I first met and worked with at the Kensington roof gardens 30 years ago."

DJ Colin Francis wrote: "RIP Steve Sutherland!! We travelled all over UK & Europe doing gigs together and you was a DJ whom I respected your determination and desire to push boundaries!

"Multi MOBO award winner, Mr Twice as Nice and all round good guy!! You will always be remembered."

Just heard the sad news of another great loss to British black music. Condolences to the Family of Steve Sutherland.

Jumpin Jack Frost added: "Absolutely devastated to hear my friend Steve Sutherland has passed away - Rest in peace brother."

Officials from the MOBO Awards said: "We are deeply saddened to hear the news of DJ Steve Sutherland’s passing.

"His contribution to the Black British Music scene will never be forgotten."

Singer Beverley Knight said she was "gutted" to hear the DJ had died.

She tweeted: "A brilliant, well-loved DJ with an immense legacy.

"Gutted."

Party Hard singer Donae'o tweeted: 'RIP Steve Sutherland.

"I can't believe this.

"This guy was one of the kindest-hearted people I know.

"He was one of the first people to play and support my music when no one else would.

'ONE OF THE KINDEST-HEARTED PEOPLE'

"This guy is a legend. May his memory be remembered forever.'

Meanwhile, fans were shocked to hear the reports.

One person on Twitter wrote: "Just heard the news that #SteveSutherland has passed away. An absolute gent and legend in the game."

Another added: "Legend in the game.

"One of the first household names that would request me to warm up for him at some dope parties throughout the years, it was an honour.

Steve was voted winner of the "Best Club DJ" at the MOBO Awards twice in London.

He also won "Best Club & Radio DJ" at the MOBO Awards twice.
