Smooth, electric, abrupt all adjectives coming from camp on Lamb - 247Sports

NORMAN, Okla. — There’s no shortage of praise coming out of Dallas Cowboys training camp about CeeDee Lamb. The first round draft pick out of Oklahoma has been turning heads left and right in the No. 88 jersey.

“Obviously, CeeDee, you can see him out there making plays,” said Chief Operating Officer Stephen Jones. “He’s very smooth. He’s very abrupt getting up the field with the ball. It just seems so natural and so easy to him as well.”

All those things are why Jones can’t find a true comparison for Lamb.

“Not really,” Jones said. “I mean, as you said, Dez [Bryant] did show early, but different type. Dez was a very physical type of guy. Not that CeeDee’s not, but CeeDee’s just so smooth and he’s so abrupt in and out of cuts and getting up the field once he catches the ball.

“So, you know, it’s been so impressive to see him. Now you certainly expect that, too, when you pick these guys first in the draft. And of course we had Lamb way up our board in terms of how we looked at him, in terms of this receiving class.

“So, you know, there’s high expectations there, but in my mind he’s met all the expectations up to this point.”

Star running back Ezekiel Elliott, too, praised him in an interview with DallasCowboys.com staff writer David Helman.

“Today, he had a great day,” Elliott said after Monday’s practice. “He was out there moving around, just catching the ball in traffic, catching on the run. He’s really electric.”

Wide receiver Michael Gallup praised him as well, but in a little different way. He bragged about Lamb’s intellectual knowledge of the game and his personality.

“Everybody up top did a good job drafting this year, and CeeDee, he’s a good dude,” Gallup said. “He’s smart. He’s quick. He’s ready to learn. And, you know, he’s a funny guy. He’s a good person to have in the locker room. So [he was a] great pick, great pick.”

Gallup admitted one thing immediately came to mind when the Cowboys selected Lamb.

“I mean, when we drafted him, it’s just I’m thinking already, Amari [Cooper] went over 1,000 yards. I went over 1,000 yards. Then, you pick up one of the best wide receivers in the draft coming out. I mean, that’s just a three-headed monster,” Gallup said.

That talent and the three’s competitive drive is certainly fueling things.

“Does it make my job easier? I’m not really sure if it makes it easier,” Gallup said. “You know, you’ve still got to come in to work, and then you’ve got the competition level. I mean, out at practice if CeeDee does something or Coop does something, you want to do just as good.

“So I don’t really see it like that. I don’t see it as easier. It’s just we have a whole another weapon, and we have already got a bunch of weapons, so it was a good pickup for us.”

In 40 games at Oklahoma, Lamb caught 173 passes for 3,292 yards (19.0 average) and 32 touchdowns. The Richmond, Texas, native recorded 62 receptions—for a single-season career-high 1,327 yards, 21.4 average and 14 touchdowns—through 13 games in 2019.

During the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianpolis, Lamb measured 6-foot-2 and 198 pounds with 9 1/4-inch hands, 32 1/4-inch arms and, on Feb. 27, recorded a 4.5-second 40-yard dash to complement a 34.5-inch vertical jump.
