Geneva, 9 November- At the opening session of the resumed 73rd World Health Assembly, the Director- General bestowed the WHO Director-General’s Health Leaders Award for outstanding leadership in global health to Her Royal Highness Princess Muna Al-Hussein of Jordan (HRH) for her “dedication and service to health and humanity” and her “tireless support over six decades for nurses and midwives”.

HRH Princess Muna is a renowned figure for her role in global health and social development. As a WHO patron of nursing and midwifery in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, Vice President of the Royal College of Nursing of the United Kingdom and an honorary adviser for WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing Development in Jordan, HRH has been a passionate advocate for health workforce development and strengthening. She has taken a special interest in developing nursing and midwifery to enhance the quality, equity and efficiency of health care, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

She set up the Princess Muna College of Nursing in 1962 as her early commitment to the provision of quality nursing and the advancement of nursing services, practice and education.  She is the founder and president of the Jordanian Nursing Council, which was established in 2002.

HRH is a recipient of six honorary doctoral degrees and a number of international awards for her leadership role in advancing health and welfare globally and her contribution to the nursing profession, including the Honorary fellowship from the UK Royal College of Physicians in 2014, the Honorary Fellowship of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery of the Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, in 2015 and the Sigma Theta Tau International Archon Award in 2007.

She is also former Commissioner to the UN High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth and Champion for the Nursing Now Campaign.

The Director General also conferred the WHO Director General Award to Honourable Minister for Health of the Kingdom of Tonga: Dr. Amelia Afuhaamango Tuipulotu and the Kingdom of Tonga’s Nurses’ Choir, who “lifted our spirits and touched our hearts”, through their video performance at the opening of the Assembly, to mark the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

2020, as the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife has been a critical year for millions of nurses and midwives. The COVID 19 pandemic has exposed the underlying issues within healthcare systems, including shortages of nurses and midwives. Many nurses and midwives have suffered and even died.
