NEW YORK CITY — The chaos and pain of 2020 didn't follow the majority Patch readers in New York City to their ballot and mail boxes when cast their votes.
Hundreds of Patch readers — 317 to be exact — responded to an survey about their experience voting in the 2020 Election.
There were plenty of things that could, and did, go wrong given the coronavirus pandemic, an unprecedented number of absentee and early votes and fears of political violence.
But most readers reported that things went smoothly, they were happy with the experience and trusted the results.
They also sounded off with a variety of takes on their experience.
"Surprisingly enough everything was great, fast, efficient, no problems," one reader reported. "Too bad for my friend and her family her polling place in the (same town) was not open on time and had tons of problems."
The survey's results are unscientific and only include responses from Patch readers who chose to respond. Here are some of the results and noteworthy responses:
Only 71 Patch readers, or roughly 23 percent who responded, actually showed up on Election Day to vote.
The lion's share of readers — 156, or just shy of 50 percent — were among the 1.1 million New Yorkers who took advantage of early voting.
Many readers also took advantage of absentee voting, with 43 each either mailing or dropping off their ballots, according to the survey results.
No Problems For Most, Not All
Of 227 readers who responded, 191 said they experienced no problems voting — that's an 84 percent share.
Early voters overall declared they had a good experience, with 125 Patch readers ranking that experience as a "4" or "5" — the top of the scale.
But it wasn't all smooth sailing for early voters — 36 readers said they waited two hours or more in line.
"It was a long time for two seniors - 75+ - to stand on their feet so I think a special line should have been dedicated for people over 65 if they didn't feel they could stand that long," one reader wrote. "We waited 3 hours and 10 minutes (but once inside, all went quickly.)"
They weren't alone.
"I went on the 2nd day of early voting and ended up waiting in line for 3 hours," another reader wrote. "Not ideal but I was willing to do whatever it took for my voice to be heard. Everyone was calm and polite. All the poll workers did a great job keeping us in the loop. I wish that all politicians had embraced mail in voting so that there wouldn't be so much misinformation going on in advance and now that Biden won."
New Yorkers Embrace Absentee Voting
A whopping 85 percent of Patch readers who mailed their ballot said their confidence in the system remains unchanged or improved.
That's despite 57 percent of readers reporting they didn't get confirmation their ballot was received by Election Day.
Most readers — 51 percent — who responded said they strongly agreed that voting by mail is safe and free of fraud.
And a 63 percent majority of readers surveyed say they "strongly agree" voting by mail should be made easier in future elections.
Election Results Can Be Trusted, Patch Readers Say
President Donald Trump's unfounded claims of voter fraud in the presidential election don't appear to hold much water with Patch readers.
Nearly 77 percent of readers surveyed said they "strongly agree" that New York's results are fair and accurate.
The percentage dipped ever-so-slightly when the question was asked about the national results — 72 percent "strongly agree" those results were fair and accurate. Of those 316 readers who responded, only 10 percent said they "strongly disagree" that the results were fair and accurate.
Readers Sound Off
Patch readers shared a variety of perspectives on their experiences voting in the 2020 Election. Here are some of their responses:
- We had about a 15 minute wait at Election District 9, but the process went very well, now with bar coded Fast Vote, simple signature on a screen instead of the large books. And it was wonderful to see the next generation of young poll workers. Also, how they sought out people in the line for Election District desks that were less busy and got them through process even faster. Well done!
- Early and absentee voting should become the norm...it encourages more people to vote!
- In the City of New York the minimum criteria for voting is scanning the bar code on a cardboard card mailed to each alleged voter, no signature or photo ID required. The card I used could have belonged to anyone. No one at the polling place verified my identity or cared. The ID that they should have used was my Driver's License. It has my name, address, age, height, eye color, two photos and bar codes. The state also issues a State ID card that is similar for those who do not drive. How hard can it be to compare a Driver's License / State ID to a list of registered voters? The method used was tailor made for fraud.
- Line was ridiculous but once inside it was all seamless
- I experienced nothing different except how to wait due to social distancing its time for this country to move on never seen behavior line this
- Waiting on line in the cold wet weather for two plus hours was awful, but poll workers were wonderful!
- Donald Trump is the father of lies
- A poll worker pulled me out of line on a cold and rainy day. She brought me and another senior citizen to the front of the line. I wasn't expecting that.
- I am responsible for my 87 year old mother and, accordingly, am extremely cautious so wanted to minimize my time inside my polling location. I wanted to drop my absentee ballot in the box inside the early polling location (which also happens to be my regular polling location) at 102 Street and Amsterdam. The crowds were RIDICULOUS and not all socially distanced, even more so given the narrow access between playground and soccer field leading to the entrance to the polling station. It was IMPOSSIBLE to get near the polling place to access the ballot box so I mailed my absentee ballot the Tuesday before the election hoping that it would arrive in time (which it did). Sadly the rhetoric on BOTH SIDES does not give me confidence that all ballots were tabulated properly given that there are many who still volubly claim that President Trump was not legally elected. In this atmosphere, I do not have confidence that any system which requires human participation (i.e., mail in ballots) will not fall prey to individuals with their own agendas.
- Early voting on the UES was horrendous. It should not take over 3 hours to vote. It is voter suppression. Why in anyone's right mind would the voting site with the most voters assigned to it be the upper east side? I waited 2 hours and then was told I was only halfway there. I got frustrated and walked off and requested an absentee ballot. NY should have done what NJ did and mailed ballots to everyone because of covid.
- New York boards of elections are an embarrassment. Terrible logistics. Awful service by the board. Poll workers were great.
- He lost and needs to leave. Plain and simple.
