The Ottawa Senators removed the interim tag from Steve Staios’ general manager title by officially appointing him as the team’s next GM, in a trio of new titles owner Michael Andlauer announced Sunday.

Staios joined the Senators in September as the president of hockey operations and then stepped in as interim GM following the departure of Pierre Dorion. Ottawa mutually parted ways with Dorion in November hours after the NHL said the franchise will be stripped of a first-round pick for their role in a nullified trade involving Evgenii Dadonov.
Staios will serve in the dual capacity of president of hockey operations and general manager moving forward.
Dave Poulin joins Ottawa in the role of senior vice president, hockey operations. A former NHL player who spent 12 seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, Poulin held the same title as part of the Toronto Maple Leafs staff from 2009 to 2014. He was also the GM of the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs’ AHL affiliate. After the Maple Leafs let him go in July 2014, Poulin joined TSN as an analyst.
Rounding out the Senators’ three moves is Ryan Bowness’ jump from assistant GM to associate GM. Poulin and Bowness will report to Staios.
How surprising is this news?
We’ll get some more context after Staios, Andlauer and Poulin speak to the media on Sunday afternoon, but the feeling was always that the GM and president of hockey operations role would be split up in Ottawa. Andlauer has often talked about wanting a “two-headed monster” filling those roles separately, so this is mildly surprising to see Staios assume both positions.
However, bringing Poulin in a senior VP capacity helps mitigate any concerns around Staios holding both roles. Plus with Bowness being elevated to associate general manager, the Sens finally have a decent sized hockey operations department.
Staios spent time in the Oilers front office last season with many wondering if he would emerge as Ken Holland’s eventual replacement as general manager in Edmonton. — Ian Mendes, NHL senior writer
What can Poulin bring to the table?
Poulin has an intimate knowledge of the Senators from his recent work as a TSN analyst. He was a frequent contributor to Senators television broadcasts as well as doing regular radio interviews in the market. He’s keenly aware of the storylines and issues around this team, so he won’t need any time to get up to speed.
Poulin has experience in hockey operations, working in the Maple Leafs front office. Prior to that, he spent a decade as coach of Notre Dame’s hockey program at the NCAA level. Poulin is a well-respected voice in the NHL, carving out a very successful playing career in the league with Philadelphia, Washington and Boston. Despite being undrafted, Poulin played more than 700 NHL games and won the Selke Trophy as the league’s top defensive forward in 1984-85. — Mendes
What is at the top of the agenda for Staios and Poulin?
With the calendar about the flip to 2024, the Senators’ new-look front office will have plenty of pressing items on their agenda. Once everybody is healthy — including Thomas Chabot and Mathieu Joseph — the club will need to juggle its salary cap to fit in Shane Pinto, who is eligible to return on Jan. 21 from his suspension.
