Soap star David Gail has died at the age of 58.
Gail was best known for playing Dr. Joe Scanlon on Port Charles, the spinoff of General Hospital. His death was confirmed by Peter Ferriero, who hosts a Beverly Hills, 90210 rewatch podcast. (Gail played Stuart Carson, the one-time fiancé of Shannen Doherty’s Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210.)
Ferriero noted via Instagram Story that Gail’s friends had recently informed him of the actor’s passing. To honor Gail’s memory, Ferriero posted throwback footage when he appeared on the podcast.
“In memory of David Gail. Here are a few stories he shared when he joined the podcast,” Ferreiro’s podcast Instagram page wrote on Saturday, January 20, referring to clips of Gail discussing Stuart and Brenda’s whirlwind engagement during her quickie trip to Las Vegas.
“For those that have contacted me ‘Why is this not showing up on Google?’ Please stop. The family will report it at the appropriate time to them,” Ferriero wrote via his Instagram Story several hours later. “I am sharing what I’ve been told to make sure his fans know what has happened. Thank you.”
Gail’s sister, Katie Colmenares, has also broken her silence on the death of her brother.
“There’s barely been even a day in my life when you were not with me by my side always my wingman, always my best friend, ready to face anything and anyone [with] me,” Colmenares wrote via Instagram on Saturday. “The bears will never be the same but I will hold you so tight every day in my heart, you gorgeous loving amazing fierce human being.”
She concluded, “Missing you every second of every day forever there will never be another 💔💖.”
A cause of death has not been publicly confirmed.
Gail was the second actor to play Joe on Port Charles, succeeding Michael Dietz, in 1999. Port Charles was named after the fictional city in New York where General Hospital is set. Gail ultimately left the show in 2000.
In addition to his roles on Beverly Hills, 90210 and Port Charles, Gail also appeared on TV shows such as Robin’s Hoods, Savannah, The Round Table, Matlock and JAG throughout his career.
“I have to say thank you to you guys for what you wrote, what you produced [and] all the ideas. That was something I’m really grateful for,” Gail previously said during his April 2021 appearance on the “Beverly Hills Show” podcast of his experience on Beverly Hills, 90210.
