There are certain things that can be done now to smooth a potential transition between President Donald Trump's administration and Joe Biden's, if it becomes necessary to hand off power to the former vice president, Trump's former acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said Monday.
"I think Republicans need to realize the longer they hold out, the more likely they'll get blamed for anything that goes wrong in the first quarter or six months of next year," Mulvaney, now the special envoy to Ireland, said on CNBC's "Squawk Box," adding that the Biden administration could blame problems on the transition period, even though that would not be the issue.
"It's not, but there's a political calculation that goes on there," said Mulvaney.
He also said that he would have no problem with Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, receiving copies of the Presidential Daily Brief, even before Trump's legal challenges toward the election are settled and the former vice president is confirmed and sworn in.
"There is no harm from that," said Mulvaney. "Joe Biden used to get those when he was the vice president and Kamala Harris is on the Senate Intel Committee. There are certain things that can smooth the transition if it becomes necessary to have one."
Transitions are important, added Mulvaney, but there is still plenty of time for it to happen.
Meanwhile, work on transitioning on COVID can already be happening, Mulvaney said, as much of the information is publicly available.
"People forget that most of the people working for the government can stay and only the political people can leave if Joe Biden gets inaugurated as the next president," said Mulvaney. "This discussion about the transition is probably overblown, but there are certain things, including that daily briefing, that could be done now to sort of make things a little bit smoother."
