PARKERSBURG — Whiskey can literally be found by the barrel as one walks between two authentic whiskey barrels into the Office Whiskey Parlor, a new bar opening next weekend in Parkersburg.

For the past 15 years, owner Amber Deem has worked in the hospitality industry, developing a standard for providing a more upscale, yet comfortable atmosphere with high quality cocktails.

While Office Whiskey Parlor serves a wide variety of different alcohol options, the main focus is the 65 different types of whiskey offered ranging from scotch to bourbon or ryes.

“We have a lot of bars in town, most of them carry the same things but there’s no other place in town that caters just to whiskey,” Deem said.

The spirits offered range from mid-grade to premium and the cocktails are made with quality as the top priority. If a drink isn’t on the menu, Deem said she keeps a bartender’s guide handy to make any type of drink desired.

“We’re more about the quality of the drinks verses the quantity. You come here and you get a good, balanced, good quality cocktail over more cocktails,” Deem said.

The drink menu was selected by Deem and each recipe has been perfected. Her favorite cocktail is the well-known Old Fashioned which has bourbon and fruit.

“It’s a classic, older cocktail. It is the perfect balance of bourbon and fruit and it’s so appealing,” she said.

Typically, women prefer vodkas over the bolder spirits like whiskey, but Deem said she hopes to find a new favorite for the ladies.

“All cocktails are consistent with balance to make sure we’re hitting that mark every time to avoid overbalancing a drink and it tasting bad,” Deem said. “I have gone through and found lots of beautiful women’s cocktails to appeal to women so they have more variety.

Whiskey will be served tableside with fresh ice or water depending on the preference of the customer. Whether the desire is a neat drink (no added water or ice), on the rocks or with a splash of water, it will be served in a glass specific to that need.

One of the menu items is the Whiskey Seduction which has rye, pino noir, black currant liqueur and lemon juice with a lemon garnish.

A few food options will be available with appetizers such as spinach artichoke dip and smoked salmon bites, four different types of paninis and either cheesecake bites or ganache-petits for something sweet.

Deem hopes to bring a speakeasy, vintage vibe to the parlor which will involve patrons dressing like they’re on a first date. Business casual attire will be required in the parlor.

“We’re trying to keep that atmosphere. I lived in Columbus for 10 years. We used to go out to nice bars and people there were dressed nicely and I want to bring that here,” she said.

Throughout the parlor, each piece of decor is designed to make patrons feel like they’re drinking in a bar during the prohibition era. With comfortable leather chairs, black and white artwork on the walls and pops of color throughout, the atmosphere takes one back in time.

“We pulled in Prohibition and the repeal of the 18th amendment because that is whiskey, and that’s what whiskey is all about. Whiskey has a very troubled past,” Deem said. “We want you to come in, be comfortable, sit, relax, sip your drink, enjoy and (converse). This is that atmosphere, a lot of thought went into it.”

The “Office Whiskey Parlor” came about because the space was literally an office space before the transformation. To pay homage to the original space, banker’s lamps are displayed throughout to go with the office name.

Opening night is Friday May 14 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 4100 College Parkway in Parkersburg. It is open Tuesday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
