The fifth annual Skyway 10K benefitting the Armed Forces Families Foundation is scheduled to be in-person Sunday, March 6, 2022. General registration begins Monday, a media release from a race spokesperson said.

The popular event gives 100 percent of registration fees to the Armed Forces Families Foundation, a nonprofit supporting infrastructure projects helping families of service men and women.

Registration to participate in the 2022 Skyway 10K is based on a lottery system, which opens to the public at 8 a.m. Monday at Skyway10K.com.

“We’re excited to announce the 5th annual Skyway 10K and we’re grateful for the outpouring of continued interest and support we receive from the community,” said Nick Peters, founder of the Armed Forces Families Foundation, in the release.

In 2021, the 10K was virtual. However, the 2022 event is scheduled to be in-person. Race officials will continue to monitor recommendations from the CDC and the Florida Department of Health, a spokesperson for the event said.

The first 2,000 participants from the 4th annual Skyway 10K were promised priority registration for the 5th annual 10K. Those people should have received an email with priority registration instructions, which started Oct. 11.

There are 7,500 general admission registration spots, priced at a non-refundable $80 per person. Another 500 spots are designated for VIP admission for $300 per person. VIP spots include free food and drinks, VIP restrooms, a gaming area and access to merchandise at the VIP tent throughout the weekend.

Registration for the lottery will close Oct. 24 at 11:59 p.m. Winners of the lottery will be notified by Oct. 28.

The 10K Skyway has raised more than $1.8 million for the Armed Forces Families Foundation since its inception, according to the release. Just last year, the virtual event raised over $134,000, Peters said.

Like past years, runners must meet at Tropicana Field the morning of the race in time to board their designated buses. Participants will then be transported to the south end of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, where they will wait for the race to begin.

Once a person has completed the 10K, they will board another bus that will take them back to Tropicana Field.

Current projects for the Armed Forces Families Foundation include bathroom and kitchen renovations at Coast Guardowned Morale, Welfare and Recreation cottages in Pompano Beach, upgrades to the movie theater at the USO at Naval Station Pensacola, and an outdoor amphitheater at the Hillsborough Veterans Memorial Park and Museum in Tampa.
