The Roswell Daily Record earned a number of staff and individual awards over the weekend in the New Mexico Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest, including the E.H. Shaffer Award for General Excellence. The awards were presented Saturday evening during the NMPA’s annual convention in Santa Fe.
Daily Record Publisher Barbara Beck said of the newspaper’s showing in this year’s contest, “Thanks to the staff of the Roswell Daily Record for their hard work and dedication to creating a publication that we can be proud of. This is the 130th year that the Roswell Daily Record has been published daily and every year at the New Mexico Press Association conference, we demonstrate by the awards we win that our staff creates and publishes a quality newspaper.
“Congrats to those who won awards this year. Newspapers are a vital part of the community and are important now more than ever.”
In addition to the first-place award for overall excellence, the Daily Record brought home another 15 staff and individual awards across multiple categories.
Alex Ross won first place in the News Writing category, while Aric Loomis won first place in the categories of Retail Advertising-Black and White, and House Advertisement. Loomis also won second-place awards in the categories of Web Advertisement, Retail Advertising-Color, and Advertising Campaign-Digital.

The Daily Record staff, as a group, was honored with first-place awards for best News Coverage and Sports Coverage, and for Shared/Signature Page. The staff also won second-place awards in the categories of Shared/Signature Page, Classified Advertising Section, and House Advertisement.
David Sterling won second place in the Obituary Page category. Sandra Martinez placed second in the category of Retail Advertising-Black and White, and Toby Martinez placed second in the Design and Typography category.
Daily Record Editor John Dilmore said of the awards, “Our staff worked hard to serve the community during a very challenging time, as it struggled through and began recovering from the pandemic. We are happy to see them recognized for work done when our community needed the newspaper most.”
