Kingston lawmakers OK hiring new attorney for two months to ensure smooth transition - The Daily Freeman

KINGSTON, N.Y. — Aldermen approved a plan to hire a new municipal attorney for the final two months of the year to ensure a smooth transition in the city’s Corporation Counsel’s Office.

During an online meeting Tuesday, the Common Council unanimously adopted a resolution to transfer $25,894 from the city’s fund balance to the corporation counsel’s budget to pay for the new employee beginning Nov. 1. The funding will pay for the employee through the remainder of the year.

Current corporation counsel, Kevin Bryant, is one of three candidates running unopposed for a state Supreme Court judgeship in the November election, so he is expected to leave the city’s employment. Bryant, a resident of Ulster Park, will be on the ballot with David M. Gandin of Gardiner and Laura M. Jordan of Rensselaer County.

Mayor Steve Noble requested the funding in order to hire a new corporation counsel to begin working with Bryant and becoming familiar with the issues his office is facing before taking over.

Details about who the new corporation counsel would be, however, have not yet been publicly released and Noble did not respond to an emailed request for information this week.

The new corporation counsel is expected to attend some council and committee meetings, as Bryant currently does, Noble said previously.
