Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribal counsel candidates advance to the General Election - The Morning Sun

The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribal community has selected candidates who will advance to the General Election scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 2.

The tribe is compromised of three districts that account for for the total registered voting membership of 2,335 out of a possible 3,487 that had an ability to register to vote.

District 1 tribal members had the opportunity to select 20 candidates from a list of 43 to move forward to the General Election. District 1 is the Reservation in Isabella County and has 1,027 registered voters out of a possible 1,592 who were eligible. Voter participation in District 1 was at 53.46%.

The candidates chosen for the District 1 Tribal Council ballot includes Brad Bennett, Samantha Chippeway, Michelle Colwell (Jackson), Levi Davis, Ronald F. Ekdahl, Brent Jackson, Theresa Jackson (Peters), Shelia Leaureaux, David Merrill Jr., Carmen Otto, Summer Peters, Diana Quigno-Grundahl, Mary Quigno, Alice Jo Ricketts, Gayle Ruhl, Maia Spotted Tail (Montoya-Pego), Bernard Sprague, Lucas Spague, Jennier Wassegijig (Vasquez), and Martha Wemigwans. Community members can vote up to 10 of the candidates for the district.

For District 2, which is the Saganing Reservation in Arenac County, the candidate Ronald Nelson is running unopposed.

District 2 has 43 registered voters out of the 50 eligible to register.

District 3 had five candidates with two advancing to the the General Election. This includes Frank J. Cloutier and Joseph Kequom.

The District, or the At-Large district, are those members who are reflective of the remaining tribal membership that live outside either of the reservations’ boundaries. District 3 accounts for the remaining 1,266 registered voters out of a possible 1,845 who were eligible to register. Voter participation for District 3 was 29.15%.

The polling stations in Mt. Pleasant is Eagles Nest Tribal Gym in Mt. Pleasant and Saganing Tribal Center in Standish. Polling stations for Nov. 2 will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
