Smooth Landing - Azusa Pacific University

BELMONT, Calif. -- On Thursday morning, the Azusa Pacific volleyball team boarded a flight and flew north. Just a few hours later, the Cougars would claim a 3-0 sweep of Academy of Art. The win is Azusa Pacific's 11th of its last 12 matches, which improves the overall record to 11-4 (6-1 in PacWest play).

Katarina Radisic tallied a game-high 11 kills, while Annaka Jorgenson finished with nine, and Kyra Palmbush and Abby Hills delivered an efficient eight kills apiece. Palmbush finished with a hitting percentage of .500 (14 attempts), and Hills wrapped up the match at .375 (16 attempts). Mina Andjelkovic distributed 21 assists without an error. Defensively, Palmbush had a total of five blocks, and Jorgenson picked up 18 digs. Bailey Henington registered 17 digs, which gives her a career number of 2,305. Henington is just 14 digs shy of the Azusa Pacific career record of 2,318 (Robin Portela, 2008-11).

How it Happened: To open the first set, the two teams were tied at 5-5 before an Urban Knights service error put the Cougars up 6-5, a lead which they would not surrender for the remainder of the match. Azusa Pacific was able to build a steady lead, including a 4-0 run that grew a 17-11 advantage into the largest margin of the set at 21-12. Academy of Art would not go quietly, as it claimed eight of the next 10 points to pull within three at 23-20. Kills by Ioanna Georgatzi and Kaitlin Craig closed the door on any hopes of an Urban Knight comeback, as the Cougars picked up the 25-20 set win.

Set two consisted of a series of lead changes to open, with the advantage switching hands five times before it was tied at 15-15. It was at this point that the Cougars strung together the largest run of the set, scoring five unanswered points behind three kills (Hills, Radisic, Georgatzi) and two Academy of Art service errors, which put the visitors up 20-15. Azusa Pacific maintained a cushion of four points over the remainder of the set, eventually claiming a 25-19 victory and a 2-0 match lead. The second set was the Cougars' most efficient, as the team posted a match-high hitting percentage of .306, with 17 kills on 49 attempts and just two errors.

While the third set started out in a 4-4 tie, Azusa Pacific quickly grabbed the momentum in its effort to claim the straight-set win. With the Cougars up 12-8, they would score the next seven points to grab a double-digit lead of 19-8. Up 23-13, the Cougars had to withstand a slight late push from Academy of Art, as the Urban Knights took four of the next five points, but an attack error by Academy of Art put the final point on the board for the Cougars.

By the Numbers: Azusa Pacific wrapped up the match at a hitting percentage of .240, and the Cougars did not have a set with more than five attack errors. The Cougars had a total of 12 attack errors in the match, which is tied for the second-fewest this season. In the service game, the Cougars registered five service aces. At the net, Azusa Pacific had eight blocks, compared to three for the Urban Knights.

Quotable:
"Tonight was a grind. Winning on the road is always difficult, and this match was no different. We had to battle and fight for every point, and I am proud of the way we accepted that challenge and had many different players step up and contribute tonight," - Head Coach Chris Keife

Up Next: Tomorrow, Azusa Pacific will visit Fresno Pacific, a team which the Cougars beat 3-0 (25-9, 25-15, 25-23) in mid September. Since that meeting, the Cougars have gone 4-1 in PacWest play and the Sunbirds are 1-4. To watch the match, click here.
