Smooth COVID vaccine rollout for kids - Spectrum News

DENTON, Texas — By the end of the day on Wednesday, about 900,000 elementary school kids received their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, the White House said Wednesday.

The vaccine has been rolling out swiftly for kids ages 5 to 11, and roughly 700,000 more have appointments at local pharmacies to get their shots, according to White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Jeff Zients.

Pharmacies like Community Pharmacy in Denton expect giving kids the vaccine will be a smoother process compared to when they started offering COVID-19 vaccines to adults in January.

The Selby family knows all about the logistics of making sure the COVID vaccines are accessible to their community. In January, when the pharmacy was able to start offering the vaccine, they had a hard time keeping up with the influx of Dentonites seeking the shot.

“We weren’t quite prepared for the changes that were going to happen. It was tough on the staff,” said co-owner of Community Pharmacy Kelly S. Selby. “We were very nervous when we first started doing the vaccines. But now I think we’ve kind of got the swing of it.”

Selby said early on in the pandemic pharmacies across the country had limited supply of COVID vaccines, but that’s not the case now.

“We anticipate that everybody who wants a vaccine for their child ages 5 to 11 will be able to get that,” said Kelly’s daughter and Denton native, pharmacist Emily A. Selby. “I anticipate once we get that shipment after it's approved, we'll be ready to go pretty quickly from there. This rollout will be so much easier compared to the stress of January’s.”

Emily Selby said younger children will receive one-third of the dose authorized for those 12 and older, and they’ll be stored in smaller vials to avoid a mix-up with adult doses. The vaccine will also be distributed with smaller needles to make it easier for pediatricians and pharmacists to give the shot to kids.

About three in 10 parents say they will not vaccinate their child, according to the most recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation. A similar percentage of parents said that they would immunize their children right away.

The Biden administration has said it’s procured enough vaccines to get shots in the arms of 28 million elementary school-age kids in the U.S.
