New dirt track for Super DIRT Week at Oswego is smooth and fast - syracuse.com

After over four inches of lake effect rain soaked the Oswego Speedway last week, many fans felt that the new clay racing surface would be adversely affected.

Those thoughts were quickly disproved Wednesday afternoon when race cars got on the new ⅝th-mile clay oval for their first practice runs for the upcoming 50th annual Super DIRT Week activities.

DIRT track prep head Jeremy Corcoran had the surface smooth and fast and all four classes of cars competing this week took their turn getting their first laps in before time trials and racing begin Thursday.

Canadian Mat Williamson, who will be looking for his third straight Billy Whittaker Cars 200 victory Sunday, posted some of the fastest big-block modified times in Wednesday’s initial practice session, while Zach Sobotka recorded some quick laps in the sportsman portion of the practice.

SHEPPARD DOMINATES: Matt Sheppard is the hottest driver in dirt modified racing and this Savannah driver kept the heat on in Tuesday night’s 50-lap modified feature at the Utica-Rome Speedway.

The $5,000 triumph for Sheppard was his 37th in 2022 and his 12th at Utica-Rome this season. Matt started ninth, took the top spot at the midpoint of the 50-lap main event and ran off from second-place finisher Larry Wight.

Demetrios Drellos was third, with early leader Rocky Warner fourth. Bobby Hackel Alex Yankowski, David Schilling. Alan Johnson, Will Shields and Willy Decker filled out the top ten finishers on this half-mile Vernon oval.

SPRINTS: The Patriot Sprint Tour was also on the U-R program and they brought a strong 32 sprinters for the annual 30-lap, Cole Cup.

Jonathon Preston led the first 22 circuits, but Jason Barney took over with seven laps left in their feature and went on to record his second Cole Cup victory and a $5,000 check. Matt Farnham was third, followed by Danny Varin and Shawn Donath.

The sportsman victory went to Jeremy Slosek, with Chip Constantino second.

MAX AT WEEDSPORT: A strong field of 53 358 DIRTcar mods was at Weedsport Tuesday, but when it was all over, Max McLaughlin was standing in victory land in his potent HBR Bicknell racer.

Ron Davis lll was the early leader, but fell out with mechanical problems and down the stretch McLaughlin pulled away to the win, with Anthony Perrego, Jimmy Phelps, Dave Marcuccilli and Mike Mahaney following.

The 75-lap/$2,500-to-win sportsman special at Weedsport saw Cody McPherson getting the win with Gavin Eisele second.

SATELLITE: This year’s Super DIRT Week satellite races ended at the Brewerton Speedway Wednesday night with the running of the 29th annual Hurricane 75 for DIRTcar 358 modifieds.

A solid field of 43 358 mods was on hand and Max McLaughlin and Tim Sears Jr. were locked in a heated battle for the top spot. But with just six remaining in the 75 lapper, Mat Williamson put on a strong closing rush and took home the $4,000 winner’s check.

McLaughlin and Sears Jr. had to settle for second and third, with Dave Marcuccilli and Jimmy Phelps wrapping up the top five finishers.

The 30-lap sportsman main event at Brewerton was won by Zach Sobotka.

OSWEGO: Thursday at Oswego, the pro stocks and 358 mods have their time trials starting at 3:30 p.m. The 358 heats and the Past Champions race start at 7:30 p.m.
