The store manager for the Dollar General in Parks Township faces multiple felony counts after a company official accused him of stealing more than $2,000 that was supposed to be deposited in the bank.
Robert Thomas Carter, 38, of Emerson Street Court in Vandergrift was charged with felony burglary, criminal trespass, theft and two counts of receiving stolen property along with two misdemeanor counts of receiving stolen property.
Carter was being detained in the Armstrong County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 cash bond, according to court records. He faces a preliminary hearing on Dec. 28 before District Judge James Andring.
Police wrote in a criminal complaint that a district manager reported the theft after receiving an audit showing that $2,072 from the Dollar General on East Second Street that was supposed to be deposited was never posted to the store’s PNC Bank account.
The district manager told police she viewed store security video that showed Carter enter the store at 2:14 a.m., which is after closing time, and remove at least two bank deposits from a safe, the complaint said.
Dollar General employees are not permitted to reenter a store after it closes for the night unless they are responding to an alarm call, which must be done with police on scene, according to the complaint.
There was no alarm triggered on the night of the alleged thefts, police said.
After reporting the thefts to police on Dec. 13, the store manager changed the front door lock and the code for the safe, the complaint said.
That same day, Carter went to the store at about 5 p.m. and instructed the employee working there to open the safe, police said.
Carter is accused of taking money the store uses to make change and bringing it to the break room where there are no cameras installed, the complaint said.
A short time later Carter returned the money he took from the safe minus $253, police said.
Cameras in the store showed Carter taking the money into the break room, returning it to the safe and then take a pack of Newport cigarettes before leaving, the complaint said.
