The £2 kitchen item professional painters swear by for 'perfectly smooth' finish - Daily Record

If you have decided that you are going to give your home a new lick of paint, you might be wondering how the professionals are able to get that perfectly smooth finish.

While a lot of it will come down to experience, one reason that a pro's wall will look so good is because the paint that they use isn't lumpy.

According to experts at Toolstation, that's not because they have special paint, they simply get rid of any lumps using a common kitchen item - a sieve.

The painting and decorating experts said: "It might surprise you to hear, but a kitchen sieve is part of many professional painter and decorators’ toolkits.

"Metal sieves can be picked up in supermarkets for just £2, and can be used to strain the paint before you start work.

Experts say that they use a sieve to reduce the risks of a lumpy finish

"Old paint can collect dust and debris over time, as well as flecks of dry, hard paint. Even brand new paint usually contains small lumps which can prevent you achieving a perfectly smooth result.

"There’s nothing worse than being left with a ‘bitty’ texture to your walls."

As the experts pointed out, a sieve can be picked up at most supermarkets for around £2. Sainsbury's are selling a 'must have' sieve for half of that at just £1 online at the moment.

The experts then explained how a sieve can help with your painting projects, stating: "To try this hack, simply position the sieve over a clean paint scuttle and pour the paint through.

"Safely dispose of any particles that get caught in the sieve and start painting. After use, simply clean the sieve with warm soapy water or brush cleaner."

They then add that sieves are more effective than tights and stockings which were used by some decorators to strain paint for many years.

This is because they had to be thrown away after every use, while a metal sieve can be used over and over again.
