AUSTIN — Judd Stone and Christopher Hilton, two top lawyers at the Texas Attorney General’s office who took leave to defend Attorney General Ken Paxton during his impeachment trial, have resigned.

Stone and Hilton will continue to practice law as part of the private firm they created during the impeachment trial, their representative told The Dallas Morning News on Thursday. Stone served as the state solicitor general and Hilton as the chief of the general litigation division, both senior positions at the Office of the Attorney General.

The two were involved in dozens of high-profile lawsuits during their tenure.

State employment records with the comptroller’s office do not yet reflect the resignations. Paxton’s agency responded to a records request filed Wednesday for Stone and Hilton’s termination documents, noting there was “no information responsive to your request.”

An agency spokesperson did not respond to questions from The News but did confirm their departure to the Austin American-Statesman and KVUE.

In May, Stone and Hilton, as well as four other agency lawyers, took a leave of absence from the agency to defend Paxton against impeachment allegations that he abused his office to help friend and campaign donor Nate Paul. Paxton, a Republican, was cleared after a two-week trial and returned to work last month.

Stone and Hilton returned briefly to state employment after the trial to tie up their service before resigning, their representative said, adding they had always intended to shift to private work after the trial.

However, in letters requesting leaves of absence, both said they intended to return to the agency after the trial was over.

“I would like to use my accrued leave time until it is exhausted; afterwards, if necessary, I will take an unpaid leave of absence. I intend to represent the Attorney General in those proceedings and to return to my position at their conclusion,” Stone wrote May 30.

It’s unclear whether any other agency attorneys will join them.
