Traveling between Desert Hot Springs and Morongo Valley should be a smoother process next month, but it'll take a week of delays to get to that point.
Caltrans announced a week-long paving project begins Feb. 24 for the three-mile stretch between Indian Canyon Drive and Hess Boulevard.
Motorists may know that area as the steep, curvy road that's full of holes and bumps between the Coachella Valley and the High Desert.
The project costs about $120,000 and is covered by highway maintenance funding, spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said. Work happens 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and travelers will be rerouted slightly so traffic may flow while construction takes place.
There are currently two lanes for each direction of traffic, but travelers will be limited to one lane during construction and Caltrans announced drivers should reduce speeds to 25 mph in the workzone.
Paving will happen Monday and Tuesday in the eastbound (or uphill) lanes and traffic will be diverted into the adjacent opposite lane.
Traffic: Interstate 10 undergoing three-year paving job in San Gorgonio Pass
Traffic: Palm Springs may add a roundabout near downtown
Westbound Highway 62 (the downward stretch) will be paved Wednesday and Thursday and traffic also will be diverted into an opposite lane during that period.
Additional work will take place Friday if necessary, according to Caltrans.
Highway 62 is a major route for big rigs and motorists should anticipate sharing the road and being behind them all week. This could be especially problematic for anyone heading uphill.
Kasinga added the agency has suspended permits for over-sized loads. This applies to trucks with heavy cargo and warning signs saying "caution, wide load."
If you don't want to deal with lane closures and a lower speed limit, there are alternate — but very inconvenient — routes between the Coachella Valley and High Desert.
East of Highway 62, drivers can cut through Joshua Tree National Park or go all the way out to Highway 177 in Desert Center. Head out that way if you want, but the route through the construction zone is a better option.
A similar project, but with bike lanes
The week after Highway 62's project wraps up, work begins on a 3.5-mile slurry seal and striping project that will include new bicycle lanes in Indio.
Beginning March 2, crews will be working on Avenue 48 between Jefferson and Calhoun streets and traffic will be affected 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, the city announced.
According to the city, anywhere from 16,000 to 20,000 vehicles are on this stretch of road on a daily basis and that means a lot of you will be affected by delays.
The project is part of an efforts to provide pedestrians and bicyclists safe access to the Empire Polo Club during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, city staff said.
It costs $1.25 million and is covered by multiple funding sources, according to the city.
Work is scheduled to be completed April 1 and drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes while construction takes place.
Alternate routes include Highway 111 to the north and Avenue 50 to the south.
