The Twins went on to beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 in an exhibition game at Hammond Stadium, scoring three runs after Maeda’s departure.
“I was scheduled to go two innings, and I’m glad I was able to go through two,” he said through an interpreter. “(It was the) first time facing hitters, so I just wanted to get that feel back. I wasn’t scheduled to give up a home run on the first hitter.”
Maeda, who said he didn’t have good command for his offspeed pitches, gave up a hit and a walk before he was helped out of the first inning by a nice double play started by Luis Arraez. He finished his outing with a 1-2-3 second inning, getting the last batter he faced — Jonathan Arauz — to strike out.
The newest Twins starter said his velocity was higher than he expected, but it’s just “the little things” that need to be refined and adjusted as he moves further into spring.
“Now it’s just getting the feel back, but as we go further into spring training throwing more innings, then I’ll start to attack hitters and get the feel back as I would in the season,” he said.
The Twins acquired Maeda earlier this month in a trade with the Dodgers for prospect Brusdar Graterol, and Maeda said he was starting to get settled with his new catchers and his new team.
“Just watching him interact with the guys, I think it’s been kind of a seamless transition for him. But it’s still a new place,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “… First outing today with a new team in front of a new group, a lot of firsts. Even though he’s a veteran, they’re still firsts. All that being said, it’s been about as smooth as you could ask for.”
Bullpen solid
While the Twins still have a bullpen spot or two up for grabs, that area certainly looks as if it will be one of the many strengths of the team. And while early spring training results don’t carry much weight, the Twins have seen some nice outings from key members of their bullpen.
Trevor May and Tyler Duffey, who each threw a scoreless inning against the Gophers on Friday, did the same on Monday. So did new addition Matt Wisler, who appears to have a leg up on one of the bullpen spots.
Zack Littell, Taylor Rogers, Tyler Clippard and Sergio Romo all threw scoreless innings of their own over the weekend.
“It is early, but it’s still nice to see them throw the ball like that,” Baldelli said. “We’ve talked about the bullpen being one of our strengths, and it’s about as good as any bullpen group in baseball. We all still believe that.”

Jake Odorizzi will make his first start of the spring on Wednesday.
