Coastal Alabama Community College students now have a direct transfer path to one of Alabama’s oldest universities, thanks to a new agreement.
During a March 5 ceremony, Coastal Alabama President Craig Pouncey and Alabama State University President Quinton Ross inked a deal to ensure a seamless transition for students who transfer from one to the other.
To seal the deal, Alabama State representatives awarded scholarships to two students expected to be among the first to head from two-year Coastal Alabama to the four-year university in Montgomery.
“Student success is what both of these institutions are all about, and this is the opportunity of a lifetime,” Ross said. “Our young people are our most precious resource, and we want to do everything we can to help them be successful.”
The transfer agreement is similar to the popular Pathway USA covenant put in place between Coastal Alabama and the University of South Alabama in 2016.
Combined, Coastal Alabama Community College and Alabama State University serve an approximate 10-county area, and graduate around 10,000 students each year. Ross said the partnership gives students, “the opportunity to expand and blossom and go on to change the world.”
Prior to signing the agreement at Coastal Alabama’s campus in Bay Minette, Ross and Pouncey told how they’d met in the early 2000s when they worked together in the Alabama Legislature.
“This is a big day for me, because there’s no one I would rather entrust your future to than my brother, once you leave here,” Pouncey said to a gathering of students, his arm linked through Ross’ as the two men smiled. “Through thick and thin, I knew he had my back and he knew I had his back.”
The two scholarships were a complete surprise to the recipients, both of whom had been hoping to go on to enroll at historically black Alabama State.
Evergreen native Traylan Packer, 19, was awarded an Academic Excellence Scholarship, which will provide him full tuition, fees and books, renewable each year. Packer, who aspires to an accounting career, said, “It feels good, because it feels like I’m being rewarded for my academic excellence, taking college seriously and trying to do my best.”
Prichard native Tyus Gill, 20, received an Academic Incentive Scholarship, which will cover his tuition, fees and books. An accomplished musician, Gill hopes to one day become a band director. “This opportunity is just amazing for me,” he said.
Coastal Alabama Community College features nine campuses altogether, and is a partner in an aviation-industry job skills academy at the Fairhope airport.
