Despite virus, primary safe and efficient
Our sincere congratulations to Sarasota County elections officials who oversaw the implementation of our primary March 17 under the most extreme and challenging conditions. Our five-minute experience was absolutely without any difficulty or fear on our part — once we saw the process in action.
The precinct's poll workers were all gloved and wiped down the pens and surfaces we used. There was no wait to vote, unlike what we saw in other states' earlier primary elections.
We can all be proud that Florida's primary can now be held up as perhaps the premier example of an efficient and safe election process.

Trump has won respect for country, himself
A March 16 letter writer berated the fact that "our fearless leader" won't tell him where to go for testing for the COVID-19 virus. Has this reader been unconscious for the last few weeks? Numerous sources — TV, print and emails — have discussed this ad nauseam!
Then, in a March 17 letter, the latest Donald Trump hater states that the president "has done nothing to earn our respect …” with his “constant lying … and his actions that continue to funnel money into his and his cronies' pockets."
The Herald-Tribune should not print false charges with no factual specifics to back them up.
President Trump has brought respect from foreign nations back to America. He has won commitments from them to fund NATO as they should have been for years. He has slashed the number of able-bodied adults collecting food stamps, cut taxes, reduced job-killing regulations and brought manufacturing jobs back to the U.S.
The president has a great signed trade deal with Canada and Mexico, has created 7 million jobs and had increased wages 3% until we were hit by this pandemic.
Our president has hopefully saved us from devastating COVID-19 casualties, like those seen in China and Italy, by immediately banning travel from China, and now European countries. He is a great leader who is saving Americans.

Relying on newspaper, in good times and bad
As I picked up my Herald-Tribune on Tuesday morning I realized how much I depend on it. This is especially true in this time of quarantine.
I've read the Herald-Tribune occasionally since 1960, and have been a year-round subscriber since the 1990s. Ownership has changed, and reporters and editors have come and gone, but I still look forward to receiving it.
I doubt that there will be a hard copy when my generation is gone. I worry about how local news will be disseminated. There are numerous venues for accessing national and global news, but our local paper is the sole venue for local news. I count on it to know what's happening with the School Board, local government and local events. I counted on it to tell me whether my polling place was open.
Let me give a shout-out to all who are involved in producing the paper, from my delivery person to the editors and general manager. I have a special place in my heart for the reporters for whom I've been able to put a face to their bylines. I feel motherly toward Carrie Seidman, Billy Cox and photographer Thomas Bender, grandmotherly to Zac Anderson, Anna Bryson, Timothy Fanning, Laura Finaldi, Ryan McKinnon and Carlos Munoz.
Thank you for who you are and what you do.

In midst of panic, caring and sharing
As a senior citizen who recently visited a local Walmart, I experienced a true life-changing moment.
As I waited in the checkout line, the woman behind me tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I needed toilet paper. I said yes and she reached into her basket and handed me a six-pack of the precious stuff.
Such unexpected kindness in the midst of our coronavirus!

Traffic answer: Build new Longboat bridge
Traffic coming from Longboat Key to Sarasota, and vice versa, could be alleviated by building a new fixed bridge directly from Longboat Key to either 10th or 12th street, connected to North Tamiami Trail.
Drivers could then swiftly drive to the airport, hospital or downtown, and to our cultural buildings, thereby bypassing U.S. 41 and the proposed roundabout at our main downtown intersection.
I made this same proposal before the new Ringling bridge was built.
By the way, whoever is in charge of the widening and roundabouts on the North Trail is doing a great job, considering the amount of work being done.

For Democrats, beating Trump must come first
In “Democrats drove women from one-issue primary,” a letter March 17, the writer asks, "Who cares about the economy, immigration, health care, school choice, any of the issues that impact the daily life of people in the United States?"
Democrats do! That is why they are so focused on getting Donald Trump out of the White House.
