Smooth Memorial Day weekend for Danbury area towns - CT Insider

Local government leaders in Southbury, Bridgewater and Roxbury couldn’t say enough good things about their residents and the continued effort they showed over the Memorial Day weekend to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

“Everything seemed good over the weekend in Southbury including maintaining guidelines like social distancing,” Southbury First Selectman Jeffrey Manville said. “I asked that the parks, playgrounds and tennis courts open up in town and they were opened.

“Full disclosure, I worked on my farm catching up on things last weekend and had not gone downtown. But heard no issues being reported.”

Southbury residents had some positive news during the Memorial Day weekend regarding the COVID-19 virus — the town flattened its curve on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

In Pomperaug District Department of Health Director Neal Lustig’s daily coronavirus report on Tuesday, he indicated that despite a slight rise early last week, the Southbury curve started leveling off with 159 confirmed cases through Tuesday. All three towns in the Pomperaug district — Southbury, Oxford and Woodbury — all saw a flattening of the curve over the weekend.

“The acceleration in the growth of new COVID-19 cases has clearly slowed, as can be seen by the flattening of the curve,” Lustig said in a prepared statement. “There was a slight uptick in cases in Southbury earlier last week due to additional cases at congregate sites.”

Bridgewater First Selectman Curtis Read said everything went well in his town over the weekend.

“Although Saturday was wet and cold, all went well Memorial Day weekend,” Read said. “People continued to adhere to social distancing and they were wearing their masks. Our parks and other public areas were previously opened and overall it seemed like there was more traffic on the roads including motorcycles.”

Read also posted a cyber Memorial Day celebration video on the town’s website.

“We are getting lots of positive responses for the video I made to celebrate Memorial Day,” said Read. The video can be found at https://vimeo.com/422822226. “It was posted on our website Sunday evening. It has been viewed over 300 times from our town hall website and many more from Facebook.”

Meanwhile, Roxbury First Selectwoman Barbara Henry said Roxbury had a “very smooth” Memorial Day weekend.

“Our parade was cancelled, but a few firemen held a short ceremony and placed wreaths at all three cemeteries, all while wearing masks and observing social distancing,” Henry said. “I heard of no problems with outdoor dining, I think everything went quite smoothly. We have not reopened anything that was closed just yet. We are working on reopening Roxbury as soon as we are ready with all requirements in place for the safety of both employees and the public.”
