Chinese apple reserves are huge and sales are not smooth, so that pressure remains - FreshPlaza.com

The Chinese apple market is not great at the moment, and the export market is similarly limited. Most of the apple supply recently consisted of low-priced apples. The rising shipping costs form an obstacle for apple export. The apple is one of the traditional fruits in China. The country has huge natural resources for apple production and China is responsible for half the global production volume. Most of the Chinese apple export is destined for Southeast Asia, such as Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Apple export was virtually non-existent in January and February because of the outbreak of Covid-19. Distribution gradually recovered in March. The overall export volume and value are both historically low this year. Furthermore, the Covid-19 pandemic is still raging across the globe and the international economy has not yet recovered. China is among the first to recover, but many countries are still struggling. Short-term economic recovery is unlikely.

Many traditional Chinese apple exporters are located in Shandong, but they mainly export second-grade apples. They generally export 65# and 70# apples. As for the price, Chinese apple suppliers mainly compete on the basis of low prices, but some suppliers export premium apples as well. When the pandemic broke out, suppliers of second-grade apples could only turn from the export market and set their eyes on the domestic market. The growing competition in the domestic market put a lot of pressure on the price, which is why the price eventually ended in such a low position.

In addition, consumption power declined during the pandemic. Chinese Spring Festival is traditionally a peak period of apple sales, but this year the outbreak of Covid-19 disturbed the market. Not only did consumption power decline, but distribution was severely disrupted. Consumer demand for apples and related processed products significantly declined. In the second half of the year the arrival of other seasonal fruits on the Chinese market added further competition for Chinese apple suppliers.
