COVID-19 vaccinations go 'extremely smooth' for Astros players - Houston Chronicle

With Major League Baseball saying it will loosen COVID-19 protocols for teams that get at least 85 percent of their Tier 1 personnel vaccinated, the Astros appear to be on their way to that mark.

Astros players who wanted shots were able to get them Monday night in Houston before the team flew to Oakland on Tuesday. Alex Bregman on Wednesday called the process “extremely smooth” and said he was confident the Astros would get to the 85 percent threshold.

Under relaxed protocols, players could work out in ballpark facilities without masks, get tested less frequently, dine indoors, and eat and drink on flights. And as long as a vaccinated player showed no symptoms, he wouldn’t have to quarantine if he came in contact with a person who tested positive for the virus. Players also will be able to convene for group activities in the clubhouse and to use saunas and steam rooms.

Manager Dusty Baker, who was vaccinated in California before spring training, noted some players had a little soreness where they got the shot.

“I would hope that they would have sense enough to get it on the opposite of their throwing arm,” Baker said. “You’re taught when you first come into this game, ‘Don’t sleep on your throwing arm. Don’t put the throwing arm on the air-conditioning or sit by the window.’ You’re always taught to take care of your arm, so I’m hoping they all got it in the opposite of their throwing arms.”
