FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio -- Two weeks into the district’s return to five-day, all-in instruction, Fairview Park City Schools Superintendent Bill Wagner said the transition has been an overwhelmingly smooth process.

“It’s going really well, I’ve received no complaints,” Wagner said. “Everybody seems to be very happy. We seem to have more and more parents wanting to have their kids return, which is a wonderful thing.

“We’re really excited we’re able to bring the kids back and the teachers are excited to see them. We still offer the remote-only learning for those who want to remain in that mode through the end of the school year.”

Going into March, the district had roughly 30 percent of families selecting remote-only curriculum for their students. While Wagner said he didn’t have an updated figure, his guess is that will decrease moving into the fourth quarter, which starts April 12.

While Fairview Park City School class sizes were already smaller compared to other districts, students are required to wear masks with barriers found in classrooms and the cafeteria.

“The pandemic is not over,” Wagner said. “We do have to continue to be extremely careful. We’re able to space kids out. We’ve got desk plexiglass partitions and enough hand-sanitizer to choke an army, so we’ve really put a lot of things in place.”

One coincidence that also has helped the district’s safety protocols at the high school and middle school includes newly-installed HVAC units that boast air filtration systems at CDC-recommended levels.

“We’re fortunate in the fact that our class numbers K-12 are pretty low on average, and we haven’t had any major outbreaks,” Wagner said. “Overall, we’ve had very few in comparison to a lot of our neighboring districts, which has been really helpful for us to continue to maintain this confidence in our parents, students and staff.

“But we haven’t seen any cases whatsoever and the few we did see were precipitated from outside activity -- parents who contracted it at work and then had to quarantine.”

Due to Fairview Park City Schools teachers and staff receiving their second COVID-19 vaccines yesterday (March 15), the district had a planned two-day return to remote learning with students returning to classes tomorrow (March 17).

Looking ahead, the Class of 2021 will have as close to a normal end-of-year experience as possible with both a prom and outdoor commencement. The latter is scheduled to be held at the high school stadium. Dates for all of the events are expected to be announced soon.

It appears as though one event that was started as a social-distance-friendly affair may end up becoming a Fairview Park High School tradition.

“We’re going to keep the senior parade,” Wagner said. “That was something that the kids really wanted and it turned out to be a really neat thing.”

As for Wagner, his tenure with the district is quickly coming to an end with retirement set for this summer. He’s approaching his last fourth quarter with the same advice he offers senior class members.

“One of the things I’ve always challenged our kids to do is finish strong so I’m deeply committed to running to the finish full tilt as I always have,” Wagner said. “We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us and a lot of things going on.

“The end of the school year is always one of the most exciting and fun times. I’m really looking forward to all of the activities that we’ve got coming up.”
