JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Several teachers and a few law enforcement officers lined up in the rain early Wednesday to get a COVID-19 vaccine at the new federally-run site at Gateway Mall in Jacksonville.
The site, inside large tents in the parking lot of the mall on Norwood Avenue just off Interstate 95, can vaccinate 2,000 people with Pfizer shot. An additional 1,000 people can get the shot at two satellite sites.
Audrey Williams was one of the first to receive her shot at the new site.
“I am elated! I am very happy,” Williams said. “I feel like I’m able to get out and do more soon. I feel like I will feel even more secure once I get the second shot.”
People are encouraged to register for the shots online (myvaccine.fl.gov) or by phone (866-200-3762), but it’s not necessary.
Those who get shots must meet Gov. Ron DeSantis’ requirements, which currently include anyone 65 and older, health care workers, K-12 school staff who are at least 50 years old as well as law enforcement and firefighters 50 or older.
The new site is federally run and supported by FEMA and the military. It’s one of four federally-backed sites in Florida.
The site is expected to be active for at least 60 days.
