NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană stressed resilience and adaptability as key to countering emerging threats at the first Transatlantic Security Initiative meeting, hosted virtually by the International Republican Institute on Thursday (15 April 2021).

The Deputy Secretary General explained that NATO takes a holistic approach to security and constantly adapts to the fast changing security environment, pointing to NATO’s work on cyber defence as an example.

The Deputy Secretary General said that the definition of security is changing dramatically, away from traditional military challenges and toward emerging ones such as cyber, AI, quantum computers, and new technologies. Mr. Geoană, who also chairs the innovation board at NATO, underlined the need to invest in new technologies to strengthen resilience for future challenges, explaining that “trying to win the wars of the future with the instruments of the past is just not working”. He further highlighted the importance of interoperability between Allies to share tools, resources and technologies, further strengthening collective resilience.

He noted that strengthened resilience and maintaining the Alliance’s technological edge are key components of the NATO 2030 initiative, which will form the core of the NATO summit agenda later this year.
