Design
This year Samsung is focusing a lot on the design aspect of smartphones. The company is also experimenting with new colours. Unlike the boring plain designs, the smartphone maker is bringing textured and gradient back panels which add an extra edge to the smartphone. Keeping up with this new trend, the Samsung Galaxy M12 also scores well in the looks department. There is no doubt that the Galaxy M12 is one of the good looking budget smartphones available in the market. The smartphone comes with polycarbonate and is quite heavy thanks to the 6000 mAh battery. The rear houses a textured panel which enhances the look of the smartphone and also offers a firm grip to the user. The back panel also houses a quad-rear camera setup placed on the top left corner in the square-shaped module. The smartphone is quite bulky and you find the volume rockers and power button located on the right side of the smartphone. The power button also doubles up as the fingerprint sensor. The SIM card tray sits on the left, while the 3.5mm audio jack, charging port and speaker are located at the bottom. The front is dominated by a 6.5-inch display. The matte finish and smooth curves of the smartphone add to its stylish design.
Display
Samsung Galaxy M12 features a 6.5-inch HD+ Infinity V display with 720x1600 pixel resolution. The smartphone display comes with a 90Hz refresh rate. Samsung Galaxy M12 is the only smartphone in this price range to come with this high refresh rate. Samsung Galaxy M12 comes with an adaptive refresh rate which means that the panel cannot be locked at a high refresh rate. The high refresh rate display functioned smoothly during scrolling through Facebook and Instagram. For some reason, the refresh rate on the Samsung Galaxy M12 is locked at 60Hz for the notification centre. Also, the 90Hz mode is turned off while using apps like YouTube. Despite the high refresh rate and HD+ resolution, the display on Samsung Galaxy M12 is not that sharp and vibrant. The brightness is also not great and you might face some struggle while using the smartphone under direct sunlight. The display is large enough for you to enjoy movies and also play games. The display also comes with an eye comfort shield which reduces the blue light from the screen and prevents eye strain. The display on the Samsung Galaxy M12 is decent but it is definitely not the selling point of the handset.
Performance
Samsung Galaxy M12 is powered by Samsung's own octa-core Exynos 850 processor. The smartphone comes in two variants -- 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage and 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. You can further expand the storage up to 1TB by adding a microSD card. Samsung Galaxy M12 performs smoothly during routine tasks such as multitasking, browsing Facebook, Instagram and browsing the internet. Along with this, you can also do a little bit of gaming on the smartphone. But it is not designed to perform heavy-duty tasks like editing or playing graphic-intensive games. You might also use a bit of shutter while navigating through apps sometimes and that is because of the refresh rate. We used the 6GB RAM variant and the smartphone delivered a satisfactory performance. Despite being a budget smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy M12 delivered a decent audio experience on both headphones and speakers.
Coming to the software segment, the Samsung Galaxy M12 runs Android 11 operating system topped with the company's own layer of One UI. The user interface is quite clean and you also get an app drawer where you can save all your apps and prevent your home screen from getting cluttered. The smartphone also comes with its own share of bloatware but you can uninstall some of the apps which are not needed. The UI also offers some basic features like one-hand mode, theme support, Game launcher and more. Despite the new UI, the smartphone also misses out on certain features like Always On Display, Built-in screen recorder and others. Other than this the UI is smooth and we are liked by the Samsung fans.
Camera
The budget smartphone from Samsung sports a quad-rear camera setup which comprises a 48MP main sensor with f/2.0 aperture, 5MP ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture, 2MP depth and 2MP macro camera with f/2.4 aperture. Despite being a budget smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy M12 delivers a really good camera performance. The images turned out really well in every type of lighting condition. The camera app is easy to use and has limited shooting modes. Also, there is no night mode so you might not be able to capture desired images during the night. Apart from this, the images captured reproduced vibrant colours. The macro shots were also fine and you can notice minute details without compromising on the quality.
The 8MP selfie camera also works fine and you can capture wide-angle selfies with accurate colour reproduction. You will definitely get some social worthy selfies using the smartphone.
Battery
Samsung Galaxy M12 is backed by a 6000mAh battery with 15W fast charging support. During our testing, the smartphone managed to last for two days on a single charge and with moderate usage. However, charging the device completely takes a bit of time. Samsung Galaxy M12 takes more than two hours to charge completely with the help of the 15W charger given in the box.
Verdict
Samsung Galaxy M12 can be a good choice for customers who are looking for a Samsung smartphone under Rs 15,000. The smartphone offers a quad-rear camera, HD+ display and is backed by a 6000mAh battery which can easily last for two days. It is a smooth performer and can be your pick if you are migrating from a feature phone to a smartphone.
