Eagles offseason program: Andre Dillard misses workout, DeVonta Smith looks smooth | 5 takeaways - NJ.com

The Eagles finished up their adjusted offseason program on Friday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Dressed in shirts and shorts (or sweat pants), the Eagles’ roster took part in competitive, team-building activities and went through walkthrough drills. The media was invited to watch the individual portion of the workout.

Here are five takeaways from the media availability:

- There were a few notable players missing from the workout. Tight end Zach Ertz did not take part in the voluntary offseason program at all, but he wasn’t the only one not on the field for the final workout.

During the media availability, left tackle Andre Dillard, defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, cornerback Craig James, wide receiver Trevon Grimes and offensive lineman Le’Raven Clark were missing.

As NJ Advance Media first reported on Eagles Extra on Thursday, Grimes recently underwent a knee procedure, so his absence was expected. Clark is coming off Achilles surgery, so like Grimes, he was an expected absence.

Dillard was a surprising absentee as he spoke to the media on Thursday after the team’s daily workout.

- During passing warmups, running back Boston Scott tossed the rock with quarterbacks Jalen Hurts, Joe Flacco and rookie Jamie Newman. The Eagles typically have four quarterbacks during the offseason, but now they have an odd three-man group, necessitating the need for an extra arm in warmups.

By the way, it’s hard to pinpoint who would be the Eagles’ emergency quarterback if wide receiver Greg Ward somehow didn’t make the team. Scott probably wouldn’t be the guy, given his 5-foot-6 stature.

- Rookie wide receiver DeVonta Smith catches everything. He and fellow wideout Travis Fulgham opened practice with a competitive boomerang catch session while the entire team watched (check out the drill in the video above). During footwork drills, Smith routinely made catches after passing the set of strategically placed cones. He ended the drills with a one-handed grab that initially looked a bit out of his reach.

- Speaking of wide receivers, former(?) running back Adrian Killins worked out with the wide receivers throughout individual drills. Killins received practice time with the wide receivers last summer as well.

At UCF, the undrafted offensive weapon (again, ?) caught 70 passes for 864 yards and eight touchdowns, so he clearly feels comfortable as a receiver.

While Nick Sirianni was in Kansas City, the Chiefs used running back/wide receiver Dexter McCluster as a gadget player on offense. Perhaps, Sirianni sees Killins’ skill set in a similar light.

Sirianni actually coached McCluster in Kansas City (2010-12) and San Diego (2016), so clearly he likes that type of player in his offense. If it helps Killins make the roster, I’m sure he’s cool with that comparison.

- Prior to practice, linebacker Eric Wilson and Patrick Johnson played a game of catch in the middle of a stretching period. While this beat writer is no Bernie Kosar, it was easy to see why both players line up on defense. Wilson, in particular, doesn’t throw a very inspiring ball.

That said, the catch session was just one example of the light-hearted but competitive atmosphere that Sirianni has presented during the offseason program. Everyone on the field is constantly smiling and the young coaches on the staff are consistently working physically in the drills.
