General Atomics buys instrumentation developer

General Atomics has acquired Synopta, a Switzerland-headquartered developer of opto-electronic instrumentation for terrestrial and space applications.

Terms of the transaction announced Monday were undisclosed. Synopta will operate as a subsidiary within its new owner’s electromagnetic systems group with the name General Atomics Synopta GmbH.

Synopta also becomes a technical center of excellence for General Atomics’ portfolio of companies and will seek to expand in new U.S.-based markets, GA’s electromagnetic systems group president Scott Fortney said in a release.

“Synopta’s pioneering expertise and innovative developments in communication, beam control, pointing assemblies, and stationary and transportable optical ground systems will supplement the diverse portfolio of laser communications, sensors, and ground systems which enable delivery of dependable solutions to government and other customers,” Fortney added.

For the electromagnetic systems group, this deal comes nearly two months after the acquisition of data analytics and software engineering services company Commonwealth Computer Research. The United Nations is a high-profile customer of CCRi’s.
