GLENDALE, Ariz. — The first field goal Cowboys kicker Greg Zuerlein attempted at State Farm Stadium was from 23 yards. He made it with ease and slapped hands with his holder, punter Bryan Anger. Zuerlein backed up 10 yards for his second attempt. Another make. Another hand slap.
After the eighth straight conversion, special teams coordinator John Fassel stood nearby and laughed.
That will do.
On Friday evening, Zuerlein kicked on Friday evening with a full operation — long snapper and holder — for the first time since undergoing offseason back injury. The pregame workout went as smoothly as hoped, as Zuerlein made all eight tries, his longest was from 43 yards. One attempt, a 38-yarder, kissed off the left post.
Zuerlein is expected to be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list within the next couple weeks.
Fassel said recently that Zuerlein will be “100% on all cylinders” come Week 1. His sentiment appeared only to strengthen Friday.
Briefly: It seemed silly Wednesday when word that Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott plans to undergo a second MRI sparked panic, inspiring tin-foil-hat theories that Prescott’s shoulder injury was more severe than the Cowboys were letting on publicly. That notion seems even sillier now. Prescott threw a few dozens passes pregame Friday to wide receiver Amari Cooper and running back Ezekiel Elliott. His velocity and distance increase as the session continued, and there was no sign of setback. Prescott plans to have the MRI following the team’s return to Dallas on Saturday. Presuming all goes as planned, he will soon participate in 7-on-7 and team drills in practice for the first time since his July 28 exit from practice. … Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn emphasized turnovers the past week after the Cowboys forced just one during the Hall of Fame Game. Linebacker Keanu Neal, who played under Quinn the past five years on the Atlanta Falcons, responded with a forced fumble and recovery in the first quarter. … Defensive end Dorance Armstrong recorded two sacks during the first half. Defensive end Ron’Dell Carter added one.
