Stacey Nelson aims to smooth the way for educators - Journal Advocate

Stacey Nelson is a woman of many hats.

As administrative assistant to the principal at Sterling Middle School, she assists Bob Hall and the students. She also serves as the school registrar, handling the paperwork and details for incoming students and those leaving the district.

This year, she took on the added responsibility of managing the district’s Infinite Campus services, which also means handling state reporting for the whole RE-1 Valley School District.

This in addition to many other tasks and duties that she handles are a big part of why Kristen Hamil, who nominated Nelson for a Crystal Apple award, calls her “the heartbeat of our building.”

“She … is the person that gets any information out to parents and the public. She basically designed our buildings web page and is awesome at constantly keeping it up to date with the current information. She puts together the student’s report cards and mails them to parents, set up registration for students and our pre-registration at the beginning of the school year,” Hamil noted in her nomination of Nelson.

“Despite all of her responsibilities she also finds the time to be our go to person whenever ‘us teachers’ have an issue with anything; scheduling, IC, the copier isn’t working, etc. Stacey is always willing to lend a helping hand to any staff member whether it is Mr. Hall, a teacher, to our cooks and custodial staff,” Hamil continued. “She lends a helping hand in designing and printing sports rosters for home games as well as the end of year awards for our students. Teachers are responsible for their own classrooms individual awards, but as time is always an obstacle, she has often volunteered to do them for any teacher that needs the extra help.”

Nelson started working in schools in 2001 in Peetz . Originally from Sidney, Nebraska, she’d taken the job in Peetz and quickly learned to love both working in a school environment as well as the Peetz community – “That town is just like one big family,” she said.

She met her husband, a Sterling native, and moved to Sterling in 2006, working in Peetz one more year before finding the opportunity at RE-1 so she could avoid the commute.

Asked what her favorite part of her job is, she is quick to respond: “I really enjoy working with educators. I have a big respect for the job that they do, and I want to try to make it as smooth as I can.”

Increasingly, that has meant taking on a technology support role, including ensuring the staff has access to resources from email addresses to doorbells. The pandemic – “the worst years of my job,” Nelson said — has only increased that role, with the implementation of Chromebooks and other resources for students to ensure they have access to the Internet and the tools they’d need to participate in remote learning. Distributing those hundreds of computers without touching or making contact with anyone was a big challenge.

Perhaps an even bigger one: “All of us having to learn how to help them learn remotely, that was a huge challenge for our district — but they did it.”

Nelson was proud that despite the challenges, RE-1 was able to navigate the pandemic while returning to in-person learning last year, and things have mostly returned to normal in the schools.

“I’m glad it’s over, for the most part,” she said.

In addition to helping teachers and staff, Nelson’s IT duties also roll over to aiding parents and students.

“Any time a student or parent needs help accessing their grades in IC she is the one to go to,” Hamil wrote in her nomination. “She sets up each account for them and creates logins for them so it is ready to go as they enter our building as a student.”

And her work with students goes beyond technology, Hamil noted. Nelson said her office sometimes serves as overflow for “the behavior kid,” as she puts it, and leads to conversations with those students waiting to talk with the principal or serving a lunch-time detention.

“I love it when they remember me in the hall afterwards,” Nelson said.

While Nelson might downplay her impact, Hamil said “she develops a pretty special bond with some of our tougher students. She can be an ear for them to vent to, or simply give them a safe place to hang out.”

Nelson said she was shocked, though appreciative, to be nominated for the Crystal Apple. For Hamil, though, it seemed only fitting.

“I can’t think of anyone that works harder or puts in more hours than Stacey does to make our school run efficiently, and that is why she is so deserving of this award,” she wrote.
