Tustin football took a major step Monday toward a goal shared by teams across Orange County.
The Empire League program became one of the first to return to practice after the coronavirus pandemic halted high school athletics in mid-March and cast a shadow over the football season this fall.
Ninety players underwent modified conditioning workouts on Tustin’s field, following guidelines that including temperature checks, social distancing, small groups and players and coaches in masks at different times.
The group included intriguing Tillers such as junior quarterback Riley Kelly (6-3, 168), senior running back Josaiah Aiono (6-1, 180) and senior linemen LaShawn Hye (6-0, 300) and Efrain Garcia (6-2, 285).
“It actually went pretty smooth,” second-year Tustin coach Anthony Lopez said Monday night after the workouts, which continue this week.
“The first day is really getting the kids acclimated. It’s brand new to them. It’s brand new to us coaches. … I told every group, ‘This is the process that we have to go through to get back to our normal type of practices.’ “
Los Alamitos’ football team also held modified workouts Monday morning.
Lopez divided his players — clad in t-shirts, shorts and cleats and armed with their own water bottles — into three groups of 30 on Monday.
Each group practice for about 50 minutes at staggered times starting at 2 p.m.
At the practices, the groups were then divided into “squads” of 10 players based on positions and assigned a coach. The groups were remain set through Phase 1 of Tustin’s return to practice plan, which it designed with Tustin Unified and health guidelines.
“We have the linemen, big skill (tight end/linebackers/running backs) and skill (defensive backs/wide receivers),” Lopez said of the squads.
“It was very, very basic. We’re really just conditioning. A lot of these kids haven’t moved a whole lot during COVID-19. You could tell which kids worked and which kids just sat at home. … This week., we’re focusing on conditioning and getting the kids back into shape and maybe adding some technical stuff later in the week.”
Despite the menu of only basic conditioning, Lopez could tell his players were appreciative just to be on their field at Northrup Stadium.
“The kids (have been) cooped up for the last four months and they want to get out,” he said. “It looks like the kids are just happy to be outside and running around. That’s part of the reason are (participation) numbers are up.”
Safety precautions were a big part of Monday.
Players had their temperatures read before the workout by boys athletic director/coach Tom Giebe, who used an infrared thermometer provided by Tustin Unified.
“Our district has been awesome,” Lopez said. “Any kid over 100 (F), we would send home. We didn’t have any.”
The Tillers also executed an entry and exit plan and kept players separated by 6 feet.
Tustin is scheduled to open its season against Capistrano Valley on Aug. 21 but Lopez isn’t sure if that date will stick. The CIF State said last week that it would announce a calendar for the fall season no later than July 20.
CIF-SS commissioner Rob Wigod has said starting the football season in January is among the options.
“We don’t know when our first game is going to be,” Lopez said. “We’re taking it day by day and making sure we’re doing everything we can to keep our kids safe and healthy.”
