State officials are investigating the death of a 51-year-old man who died while in police custody, Attorney General Gurbir Grewal's office said late Saturday night.
The man, whose identity has not been released, died Saturday afternoon after being arrested by a state trooper outside a state police substation in Totowa, officials said.
"Here, according to the preliminary investigation, there was no use of force by the arresting trooper or any responding troopers; rather, the Attorney General’s Office is conducting this investigation because the decedent died while in law enforcement custody," officials said in their statement.
The unidentified man was arrested during a motor vehicle stop after police found narcotics in his vehicle, the Attorney General said. The man then suffered an "undetermined medical emergency" shortly after he was arrested around 11:30 a.m. and placed in the back of the police car. The trooper, other responding troopers and paramedics administered medical aid, officials said.
The man was then transported to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, where he was pronounced dead at around 1:05 p.m.
The Attorney General said it is required to investigate all civilian deaths that result from an encounter with a police officer who was acting in their official capacity as a law enforcement officer or while the civilian was in police custody.
Officials said Saturday the investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time.
