Stop Using A Pumice To Keep Your Feet Smooth | Moms.com - Moms

Historically, pumice stones have been used on feet for at-home pedicures. The idea is that the pumice will slough away dead skin and help your feet be baby smooth. The problem is that it's easy to damage your skin with a pumice, especially if you have poor circulation, you're on blood thinners, you have thin skin, or you have diabetes. What's more is that your pumice stone may be harboring bacteria in its pores. What's a fabulous diva to do, then if she wants to get rid of the dead skin and calluses on her feet?

It turns out that there are some much safer alternatives to the pumice stone that may be much better for your skin - and your health.

Washcloths

While bathing and after soaking in the tub for a while, use a rough washcloth to slough the dead skin off from your feet. This is particularly effective in the little indent area of your ankles. Soap up the washcloth and get to work with it. You're much less likely to injure yourself or dry out your skin if you use this method.

The best washcloths for this purpose are actually the ones that you can find at the dollar store or in Target's dollar spot that are intended for kids. They're stiff enough to do a good job with exfoliation while being gentle enough to not irritate even the most sensitive skin.

Loofah

A loofah is another exfoliating option when you want to avoid a pumice stone. A loofah is somewhere between a pumice and a washcloth. It's a natural exfoliator, and while you still ought to be careful not to be too rough while using it on your feet, it's still a less-risky alternative.

Like your washcloths, foot brush, and even pumice, you will want to make sure you're disinfecting it or replacing it regularly so as not to spread bacteria. A loofah can be used in other places where dead skin likes to stick around - elbows, behind the ears, and your knees, so it will be a good thing to have for your skincare routine.

Paraffin Wax Treatment

A paraffin wax treatment is a little more on the risky side. You won't want to go this route if you suffer from neuropathy or have open sores. You'll need a paraffin wax heater, the wax, moisturizer, spa gloves, and a towel. After heating the wax, you will slowly submerge one foot at a time into the heater and spread your toes.

You'll want the wax to cover your foot as though it's a glove over your toes and feet. After you've covered both feet, you're going to let that wax harden before peeling it off about ten minutes later.

Foot Brush

A foot brush, like a washcloth, is a more gentle option for getting rid of the dead skin from your feet. While you do have to take care that you do not brush too hard, a foot brush is a good alternative. Like with the washcloth, you will want to soak your feet in the bath first for the best results, but you can also dry brush your feet.

A foot brush is also believed to improve circulation in your feet. The foot brush method for removing dead skin and callouses works best with a scrub.

Natural Scrubs

There are a variety of natural, DIY, scrubs you can make for your feet. The most common scrub involves using oatmeal, but there are recipes for using coffee grounds, sugar, and even honey and lemon.

Rather than using these with a pumice stone, use them with a washcloth, foot brush, or loofah to get that smooth-skin feeling. Be sure to moisturize after you scrub. Some scrubs can be drying to skin, and dried skin cracks easier and is more prone to infections.

Foot Soaks

We've already mentioned soaking while in the tub, but just soaking your feet can be a good option for loosening up the dead skin you want to remove. While you can soak in plain water, you can use a variety of soaks - including those you make at home. You do want to be careful about ingredients.

Don't use anything with alcohol or that might dry your skin out. Epsom salt and peppermint oil is a common foot soak combination - especially if your feet are also tired from standing on them all day. A good foot soak can be a great way to pamper yourself and boost your mood.
