After releasing “Killing Me Babe” in September, Foley is back with new music today (November 25), and we can’t get enough of it!
Consisting of longtime best friends Ash Wallace and Gabriel Everett, Foley is a kiwi pop duo from Auckland, New Zealand. Their music is said to bond people together through the ups and downs of life, all while remaining both unique and innovative, and their new track “Smooth It Over” exemplifies this perfectly.
The song focuses on both the pressures of love, as well as the overall idea of honesty in a relationship, two topics in which many listeners can relate to. While remaining both “playful and bouncy” and relaying this powerful message, “Smooth It Over” is truly a must-listen!
After performing alongside artists like Tove Lo, Still Woozy, Two Door Cinema Club, BENEE and more, Foley is “itching to get back on the road” and grow in the music industry as a whole, and we can’t wait to see how their journey unfolds.
Read our full Q&A with Foley below to learn more about this talented musical duo, their new single, their plans for the future and more, and be sure to let us know what you think of “Smooth It Over” by either leaving a reaction at the bottom of the post or by sending us a tweet at @celebsecrets.

Celeb Secrets: For people who may not know you yet, can you explain your musical style and a little bit about who you are as an artist?
Foley: “We are a pop funk duo from Auckland, New Zealand. We focus on making music that is energized, experimental, fun and hopefully unique. This most recent project has been about exploring our sound more and trying to push the boundaries of pop music a little more so that we aren’t making pop that sounds like anyone else.”
CS: You are said to be a kiwi pop artist! What is kiwi pop exactly, and how did you land on this genre?
Foley: “Kiwi just means from New Zealand! It’s just pop from the country we call home.”
CS: You are a singing duo, which I’m sure is so much fun! How did this partnership come to be?
Foley: “We’ve been best friends for almost 8 years now, and we were both in separate bands for a long time before Foley started. We hadn’t ever thought about making music together until one day we were both at odds as our bands were spitting up, and we just thought it would be fun to write something together. We’ve been hooked ever since!”
CS: How does creating music in a duo compare to creating music independently?
Foley: “It’s been a really easy partnership to be honest because we have an amazing friendship to fall back on. Any creative’s decisions we can keep totally creative, and not let it be personal. I think that’s really unique to have so much trust in each other to begin with and to bring that into your music.”
CS: Your single “Killing Me Babe” came out in September, and we are seriously obsessed! Can you tell us a little bit about the story behind the track?
Foley: “‘Killing Me Babe’ is sort of tongue in cheek. It’s about how somebody loving you and thinking you can do no wrong is actually quite pressuring and intense. When someone thinks the world of you, it can feel like you don’t meet expectations and could never live up to it.”
CS: Aside from “Killing Me Babe,” your newest single “Smooth It Over” came out TODAY (November 25th)! Can you tell us a little bit about the story behind this track, as well?
Foley: “‘Smooth It Over’ is a little more playful and bouncy than our previous songs. It’s about the change between the honeymoon period and the more comfortable period of a relationship. Not shying away from letting your partner see you for who you really are, and not smoothing the edges of your personality to pretend you’re perfect. We have had this track in the works for nearly 3 years, and we worked on it with amazing writers from Sweden who were such a pleasure to work with.”
CS: What stories do you want to tell through your songs in the future, and what message do you want fans to take away from your music?
Foley: “For us, music is all about connection. We tell our stories because they feel cathartic to us to get out onto the page, but also so that people feel less alone when they feel something similar. When we play shows and see our fans singing back to us, and know that they have felt what we’ve felt, it’s the most amazing feeling in the world. You can never be lonely in that environment!”
CS: What does the process look like when you create a song? Are there any quirks to your method?
Foley: “It’s different every time! That’s the magic of it I think. Recently, we’ve been trying not to write on the instruments that were both best at playing, so that we are more challenged and don’t play the same things. That’s been fun!”
CS: Who/What are some of your musical inspirations either artist-wise or in your personal life?
Foley: “We are inspired all the time not just by music, but by visual art, dance, and all creative practices. Recently, I have been really inspired by cooking and super at peace when I am preparing food, but there’s nothing better than hearing a great song and thinking “how the heck did they do that?” I love the new MUNA album, and that has me super inspired.”
CS: Can we expect an album in the near future?
Foley: “Hmm….”
CS: I know you’ve been a supporting act for artists like Tove Lo, Still Woozy, Two Door Cinema Club, BENEE and more! Is there anyone that you would really like to tour with in the future?
Foley: “We would love to tour with Caroline Polacheck, Charli XCX or Remi Wolf. There’s so many amazing artists out there that we’re obsessed with!”
CS: Can we expect a headlining tour in the near future?
Foley: “Absolutely! We are itching to get back on the road.”
CS: Lastly, since we are Celeb Secrets, do you have any secrets about either yourself or your music that fans might not know?
Foley: “Oooo maybe that I am afraid of tomato sauce? Not a musical secret, but it’s definitely a strange fact!”
