BENGALURU: A week after deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar launched a website to draw recommendations from the public on how to build Brand Bengaluru, participants in a Twitter exercise conducted by TOI Bengaluru emphasised that addressing mobility issues is key to enhancing the city's image.
Better roads topped the list of suggestions. Bengalureans are eager to ride, drive, cycle and walk on roads that match the global reputation of the city. Right now, some busy areas and business hubs are riddled with potholes and tarred surfaces are conspicuous by their absence, they said.
Rajesh S tweeted: "Getting existing things right should be the first step." According to Rajesh, a major concern in all metro cities these days is the issue of waterlogged roads. "The BBMP has to get the drainage systems on the roadsides cleaned...," he added.
Derek Kandur, another participant, said the city's administration must ensure 5,000 electric buses are purchased before the end of this year. He also suggested installation of solar-panelled LED streetlights at all major junctions, clean drinking water facility across all busy areas and at least five cycling parks with 5-10km of area to pedal.
Some citizens highlighted that while road expansion is needed, trees shouldn't be recklessly chopped off in the process. The image of Bengaluru being the Garden City was imperative to building the brand as proposed, they opined. As mobility issues were central to the suggestions that poured in on the TOI Bengaluru Twitter handle, Aruna Nambiar, another netizen, stressed the need to implement zoning in order to prevent uncontrolled commercial expansion like in Indiranagar and Kammanahalli areas.
An efficient garbage disposal system, free WiFi, clean sidewalks, and better administrative coordination were some of the other factors highlighted by citizens.
