Private Jet Etiquette: Dos and Donts For A Smooth Experience - Simple Flying

The private jet experience is something very special and just like a 5-star hotel or Michelin-star restaurant, there are general rules of etiquette onboard.

Pre-take off

The guests will be personally met by the captain, first officer and flight attendant. The flight attendant will have prepared welcome drinks, canapés and hot or cold towels. Baggage should be stored away safely, the flight attendant will check before take off. Seatbelts should be worn but if the guest decides not to wear it, that is their liability. If the guest has any questions about safety equipment and evacuation they can speak to the flight attendant or flight crew.

Inflight

Once the climb is complete and it's safe to move around, the seatbelt signs will go off. It is possible to visit the cockpit during this time. The flight attendant will prepare the meals and ask when the guests would like to eat. Any food can be prepared for the guest from reheating a McDonald's to a full caviar service. The flight attendant will be discreet and is there for safety and service. However, please be aware that there is often only one crew member onboard and they can only be in one place at a time! They work from a very small galley and it has limitations.

Service

The normal etiquette is to wait until everyone has their meal placed in front of them before starting to eat. However on a private jet, it is rare that everyone gets their meal at the same time, so it is acceptable to start eating when you are served. Meals can be served silver service as many European guests prefer or family style or buffet style which is more popular in the Middle East, India, Russia and Asia. Children are usually served first.

Cultural differences

The American style of eating is to use the fork in either hand. Continental style means having the fork face down in the left hand and the knife in the right hand. In the Middle East, India and parts of Africa the right hand is used for serving and eating food. Using the left hand could be seen as offensive. Also in India, a half-empty glass should always be refilled. Chopsticks should always be on the right side and never used to poke at food. Flower arrangements onboard should be carefully chosen as certain colors in some cultures such as Russia and Asia, color can be a bad omen.

Politeness

Discretion is very important onboard the aircraft. Things can be quite formal at times for many guests. Diplomacy and politeness are also important. The flight attendant will be visible and invisible as required. The lead guest will normally be addressed first. It is possible on most aircraft to set up a bed if a guest wishes to sleep for the flight. Business meetings can be held in the cabin and the flight attendant will remain in the galley as necessary.

Final thoughts

Most flights are non-smoking and some aircraft (especially in the Middle East) are dry and have no alcohol onboard - it's a 'good to know'. Also in the Middle East and some parts of Africa, the food will all be halal and with no alcohol. Absolutely any chosen meal can be provided, but some things such as oysters are discouraged because of food safety. Tips for the crew are much appreciated as a 'thank you' but are never expected, it is down to the individual and once again, discretion is observed.
