South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson has joined a challenge to the federal approval of a California rule that would force automakers to increase their sales of zero-emissions tractor-trailers beginning next year.
Wilson announced Thursday he had joined a 19-state petition led by Iowa Solicitor General Eric Wessan that asks the District Court of the District of Columbia to review and reject the Environmental Protection Agency's approval of a California Air Resources Board regulation requiring vehicle manufacturers to increase their sales of zero-emission and near-zero-emission heavy duty vehicles to 40% to 75% of sales depending on the type of vehicle by 2035.
News stories on the approval add that California sets the standard for environmental regulation because of an exemption in the Clean Air Act and the federal government and other states – eight have already adopted similar rules – follow suit.
Wilson said if court doesn't reject the EPA's approval of the regulation and a similar adoption process plays out the increase in prices would be "crippling."
"There were more than 13 million trucks on U.S. roads in 2020, carrying the goods we all buy," Wilson said. "Either we won’t be able to get the things we need, or the cost of those goods will be astronomical. This ban is another example of prioritizing the climate change agenda above everyday people."
Other states are involved in the lawsuit are Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
