District 5 - Eveleth area
CO Darrin Kittelson (International Falls #1) reports that the muzzleloader season came to quite a close with a few people out trying to fill their tags. While muzzleloaders were put away, trappers hit the woods with the pine marten, fisher, and bobcat seasons opening. The small dusting of snow and cold weather should help things. ATV violations were encountered and handled.
CO John Slatinski IV (Ray) contacted trappers during the opening days of the marten/fisher season. Conditions are very good for getting around, with most of the trails and roads frozen. Grouse had hunters wondering where they had disappeared. Several groups commented they were still seeing significant numbers of grouse at the end of the regular deer season, and now they seem all but nonexistent. Several muzzleloader deer hunters were contacted, trying their luck as the final days and hours closed in. They were reporting seeing a few more deer, but not what they were hoping for. The northern pike spearing crowd has started to venture out, with widely varying conditions noted. Although some fish were seen, it was not what they expected.
CO Troy Fondie (Orr) reports monitoring area forest roads and public water access sites. Little angling activity was noted over the week and ice remains unsafe. Fisher/marten trappers were greeted with opening-day rain. Equipment work continues. Administrative reporting is ongoing.
CO Sean Cannon (Cook) completed field training and took over the Cook station this week. Time was spent collecting equipment and getting maintenance done, along with getting to know the station. Muzzleloader deer hunters, small-game hunters, ice anglers and trappers were checked, with low success rates seen for all. Several ATV riders were out taking advantage of the unseasonable weather and lack of snow this week. Time was also spent monitoring for decorative materials.
CO Aaron Larson (Tower) worked primarily on angling, trapping and ATV enforcement. Larson checked many anglers across his station who found a slow walleye bite. Violations included no state park permit, driving around a barrier/closed area in a state park, allowing youth to violate ATV laws, and more than one passenger on a Class 1 ATV.

CO Marc Johnson (Hibbing) primarily worked angling, ATV and trapping activity. Warm weather throughout the week created more uncertainty for ice conditions, but anglers could still get out onto local lakes. Violations encountered included angling with extra lines, spearing with no license, and licenses not in possession.
CO Shane Zavodnik (Virginia) spent time working on equipment maintenance tasks and checking angling activity. Warmer weather brought both ice anglers and grouse hunters out during the week. Many of the local lakes were also active with ice skaters due to unusually smooth ice conditions. Additional time was spent following up on a violation involving an ATV stuck on a snowmobile trail.
CO Duke Broughten (Aurora) spent the week monitoring hunting, trapping, and fishing activity. Ice on area lakes is poor, with some lakes still open. Muzzleloader deer hunters reported limited success. Grouse hunters continued to report seeing a high number of birds. Snowmobilers anxiously wait for snow.
District 6 - Two Harbors area
CO Sean Williams (Ely #1) reports checking several muzzleloader deer hunters over the weekend. Reports continued to be bleak, and even with freshly fallen snow, deer sign was exceedingly rare. Angling activity was light and ice conditions noted were highly variable. Some areas measured as little as 1 inch, while on the same lake, other areas measured up to 7 inches. Anglers are urged to continue to be cautious, especially with the varied weather conditions we’ve seen.
CO Brent Ihnen (Ely #2) continued checking deer and small-game hunters this week. He also patrolled for trapping activity.
CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Grand Marais) checked trapping activity and muzzleloader hunters, and followed up on past season big-game investigations. Enforcement action was taken for big-game violations.
CO Hudson Ledeen (Grand Marais #2) reports that some trappers hit the woods this past weekend searching for fisher, pine marten and bobcat. Several traps were checked, as were a few trappers. Investigations are ongoing following violations from the deer-hunting season. Enforcement action was taken for lend and borrow big-game violations.
CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) completed a case report for a deer case, answered various questions from the public, and spent time on a litter investigation.

CO Kylan Hill (Tofte) reports continued work on multiple deer-hunting-related investigations throughout the week. Hill, along with COs Ledeen and Wahlstrom, conducted multiple interviews over the weekend surrounding suspicion of lending and borrowing deer tags. Admissions were received, and multiple people were issued citations and $500 in wildlife restitution for the cost of the deer. A wanton-waste complaint was followed up on. Ice reports have been mixed, but with the warm weather throughout the week, please use caution when venturing out on the lake.
District 7 - Grand Rapids area
CO Vinny Brown (Northome) checked ice anglers, responded to TIP complaints, and answered wildlife-related calls. An injured swan was rescued from a frozen lake and was turned over to rehabbers. CO Hochstein was assisted with a TIP report of a person shooting a deer from the road. Enforcement action was taken for shooting a deer from the roadway. The deer was seized, as was the suspect’s compound bow.
CO Jayson Hansen (Bigfork) worked ATV riders, small-game and big-game hunters, and anglers. He patrolled campgrounds and trails. Numerous game and fish-related questions were answered. He also responded to wildlife-related complaints.
CO Mike Fairbanks (Deer River) checked hunters, trappers and spearfishers. Fairbanks and his K9 partner Fennec also assisted in locating evidence for an ongoing investigation. Enforcement action was taken for illegal party hunting and shooting from the road right-of-way.
CO Thomas Sutherland (Grand Rapids) worked ice anglers, a few of whom ventured onto area lakes. The panfish bite has been good where anglers can get out. Sutherland finished up old wetland-filling cases and took enforcement action for angling without a license.
CO Jimmy Van Asch (Pengilly) focused enforcement efforts on ice angling, dark house spearing, small-game hunting, and trapping activities throughout the surrounding areas. Several trapping and nuisance-animal complaints were also fielded and addressed.
CO Taylor Hochstein (Hill City) monitored deer hunting as the muzzleloader season ended. Some small-game hunters were out and about as the bobcat season opened. Grouse hunting continues to be great. Ice anglers are reminded to use extreme caution as ice conditions vary dramatically from lake to lake.
CO Brian Holt (Grand Rapids) checked muzzleloader deer hunters and grouse hunters during the previous week. Time was also spent on trapping and angling activity in the Grand Rapids area. Holt worked a day on Upper Red Lake with another officer checking numerous anglers. Enforcement activity involved angling violations.

District 8 - Duluth area
CO Derek Peterlin (Brookston) spent time getting to know the Brookston station and completing required annual training. Questions were fielded regarding the bear-hunting lottery and an injured goose. He checked anglers on area lakes and a few trappers getting ready for the fisher and marten season. Enforcement action included operating an ATV without headlights illuminated and no angling license in possession.
CO Andy Schmidt (Duluth West) spent much of the week monitoring angling activity and ice conditions. Calls of dumped deer carcasses were handled, as were complaints of dogs chasing deer.
CO Kipp Duncan (Duluth East) completed the final phase of training CO Hand. Their final days included trapping enforcement that involved locating traps, identifying violations, and monitoring times and dates of checks. A few muzzleloader deer hunters, ice anglers and grouse hunters were also checked. Duncan also completed maintenance on his squad, worked trapping enforcement, and responded to a couple fishing TIPs that were unfounded.
CO Mikeena Wehr (Carlton) continued working on a big-game investigation. Anglers were seen venturing out onto area lakes. Ice thickness is not consistent and should be checked at regular intervals. Remember, no ice is 100% safe.
CO Aimee Hand (Willow River) spent the week exploring her station. Many early ice anglers were found but unfortunately not many were too successful in finding the fish. Grouse and deer hunters were checked. The trapping opener was worked with the warm weather, appearing to have some trappers leery of starting this early.
CO Ben Karon (Pine City) spent time this week monitoring ice-angling activity. With the warm weather this week, it is important to keep safety in mind when venturing out on the ice. Ice anglers were checked on area lakes before the warmer weather. Angler success was varied. Patrols for small game and deer hunting continue. Training was also attended.
Statewide Marine Unit
CO Matt Miller (Marine Unit – Duluth) handled a wolf predation complaint near Silver Bay, with the matter referred to USDA’s Wildlife Services after a wolf took a domestic dog. Commercial angling audits were completed. A meeting was attended with SLC Rescue Squad as the Marine Unit works on setting up watercraft training and equipment for the coming year. Enforcement action was taken for big game and commercial violations.
