GEORGETOWN, Del. – For this edition of Foodie Friday the team is featuring a spot that has customers that have been coming back daily for decades.
New Owners, Same Passion
Wilson’s General Store will be celebrating it’s 100th anniversary in just over a decade. Even though it’s been lovingly handed from one family to another, some things stay the same.
On this visit, owners Tim and Laura Cumpston were busy behind the grill, and cash register, respectively. And, that’s typical on any given day.
“It’s funny, because every day we’ll get a lot of repeat customers, and we’ll also get new customers. It seems like every single day,” Tim said with a smile. “Normally, you can’t get a spot in the parking lot.”
“Whatever people want, we’ll give them.”
But that didn’t stop Tim and the rest of the folks at Wilson’s from treating the Foodie Friday team like family, and serving up comforting favorites. Tim is a natural at the grill, as he plows through the endless orders, while also preparing a scrapple egg and cheese, and cheesesteak for Foodie Photog Mike and Host Hannah Cechini.
The scrapple egg and cheese towers with a generous serving of two big slices of scrapple, two eggs, and plenty of melty cheese. “I want to give [the customers] what I like, and our motto is a good product for a fair price,” Tim explains. “Whatever people want, we’ll give them.”
And as for the cheesesteak, Tim’s formula is tried and true; finely chop the beef, sprinkle some Montreal seasoning on the onions, and dress it up with a generous helping of provolone.
Comforting Creations
“I can think of few things better than a nice, hearty cheesesteak on a colder day, like today,” Hannah remarked as the skies hung gloomy outside. “This is kind of like the perfect thing to warm you up, and then keep you going. The onions have a nice, subtle sweetness to them, as well. The fries are really crispy. They’re crunchy, they’re also really well-seasoned. I love how soft the bread is, too.”
“The sweetness of the onion kind of lets me notice the smokier notes of the provolone a little bit better,” Mike quipped. “You definitely want to bring some fries to the party with the cheesesteak.”
The scrapple egg and cheese, meanwhile, rightfully earned its place in the Foodie Friday Cross Section Hall of Fame. “This is like a Big Mac of scrapple sandwiches. This is not one layer deep; this is two layers deep,” said Mike. “You’ve got to make sure you’re ready to eat when you challenge this, boy.”
Hannah, simply calling it what it is: a perfect Delmarva breakfast sandwich. “The scrapple is awesome. It’s really crispy, and kind of has a little crunchy layer on the outside. But, the inside is still nice and soft. The bread is also really soft, too,” they said.
Serving Up a Story
But the thing that makes this food so special, is that it comes with a story. Tim and Laura took over the reigns from Jim Wilson’s family. Since then, it’s been the couple’s mission to ensure that with each customer served, they would carry the family’s legacy forward.
“That was important to us, to keep the Wilson name,” Tim explained. “Wilson’s General Store. 88 years, so we inherited a lot of Jimmy’s customers, and like I said, we’re adding to them every day.”
And for Hannah and Mike, that passion for honoring the Wilson family, was abundantly clear.
“Aside from the fact that the food here is really good, and it’s very obviously cooked with a lot of love, one of the things that I really enjoy about this place is that it is a community staple,” said Hannah. “And, it’s been here for a long time. You can really tell that people love this place. They come in here, they’re greeted like a member of the family.”
