Located in Bang Sa-ai, Ayutthaya, SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International Centre of Thailand, or SACICT, serves as a Thai handicraft knowledge and preservation centre with six exhibition spaces that present a historical perspective of the artisanal heritage.
Its Gold and Textiles Gallery features an exhibition titled "To Continue Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother's Endeavour", whose recent opening was hosted by Pornpon Akathaporn and Adisak Chanvitan, SACICT's CEO and deputy CEO.
The exhibition is dedicated to the achievements of HM Queen Sirikit in the field of silk textile arts and vocation.
In the 1950s, HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit began visiting rural provinces, and became aware of the problems faced by agriculturists. If nature was not in their favour, then their livelihoods would be drastically affected.
A royal initiative introduced supplementary occupations that relied on raw materials available in their own communities, and on local knowledge and individual craftsmanship.
The supplementary occupation included silk weaving. Over the years, the upgraded quality through design and changes in production processes has made Thai silk renowned throughout the world.
Thai silk experts and aficionados, namely Kullawit Laosuksri, editor-in-chief of Vogue Thailand, Akkharajaya Kaewaphon, senior manager for exhibitions at Iconsiam, and Treechada Petcharat, actress, joined a discussion, moderated by Asst Prof Anucha Thirakanont, dean of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Thammasat University.
The exhibition features praewa textiles, mudmee silk, silk from the fine inner filaments of the cocoon, hilltribe textiles and varieties of silkworms, presented through a contemporary display.
