Complete vote totals won’t be available until late Thursday or early Friday, when late absentee ballots will be tallied, but the results of the Tuesday, Aug. 11, Democrat and Republican primaries show (to no one’s great surprise) Joe Biden and Pres. Donald Trump as the winners.
In the Republican primary, Trump garnered 62,736 votes (79.35%) statewide according to preliminary results on the website of the secretary of the state on Wednesday morning.
The other Republican candidate, Rocky De La Fuente, got 5,701 votes (7.21%) and 10,628 (13.44%) registered Republicans voted as “uncommitted.”
Among Connecticut Democrats, Joe Biden got 164,555 votes (84.56%), Bernie Sanders got 22,747 (11.69%), Tulsi Gabbard got 2,667 (1.37%) and 4,639 voters (2.38%) came out to the polling place to say they were “uncommitted.”
Registrars who were in contact with The Lakeville Journal on Wednesday said that turnout was light but that things went fairly smoothly.
“Everyone cooperated with the safety instructions and we had extra staff to guide people through the one-way traffic lines,” said Sharon Democrat registrar Marel Rogers. “That helped. I hope we instilled a sense of trust in the system, since everything went smoothly.”
One lesson learned that she wanted to share with voters in advance of the November election: “I want voters to know that it’s beneficial if they mail or put their ballots in the drop box well ahead of election day.
“There is a process to logging in an absentee ballot and the ones done by the Monday before the election are noted on the official check-off list and are counted in the middle of the day of the election.
“Ones that are delivered after about noon on the day before get counted at the end of the election day and so the results may not be too prompt.
“The postmark grace period means we won’t count any late arrivals until Friday morning. So if you’re voting absentee, you can’t vote often — but you can vote early!”
The results by town at the end of day Wednesday, Aug. 12. These numbers come from the office of the secretary of the state, except the numbers for Sharon, which were corrected by Rogers, and the numbers for Cornwall, which are different in the Democrat registrar’s tally than the state’s numbers by one (294 versus 293).
Unless otherwise indicated, the total turnout includes the number who voted absentee.
In general, the numbers indicate that many more Democrat voters chose to vote absentee than in person, while Republicans were split about half voting absentee and half voting at the polling place.
